nyc'ers: quick question - is it safe to take the subway out of manhattan late at night?

A few friends and I are thinking about heading out to NYC the week following next and the only place we could find with reasonable rates was about 30mins outside of manhattan. If our night ends around 1am or so, would it be okay to take the subway out or would taxi be a better bet.

If it's taxi, approx. how much would it cost?

The NYC subway system is actually pretty safe these days. Even at 1am 3 or 4 guys traveling together should not have any trouble.

I would be more concerned about the neighborhood you are getting off in than the subway itself.

My wife and I have used the subway late at night many times. No problems at all.

I was on the subway last night at 230 by myself with absolutely no fear.
It's not like the 80s man, NYC is (mostly) a haven now.

Yeah, the subway's fine (just got back from NYC 2 hours ago, actually)...but as someone else already asked: why would you be done around 1AM? At the very least, stay til 3...Friday night I went to bed at 7.

Also, if you're concerned, you can always split a cab...cost more, but you got 4 guys.

My #1 concern is always the urine puddles lurking nearby, ready to trip you up from behind some obscure corner...other than that it's okay...
