Well, I am taking the better half out on the town in Saturday and need a restaurant recommendation. I wanted to go to Wolfgang's Steakhouse (founded by old Peter Luger's Head Waiter) but they were booked and I can't remember the name of this "rural japanese steakhouse" on East 10th street that was our favorite haunt when we used to spend a lot of time in the city... We may go there anyway and see if they are still there and if they will take us, but in the meantime I would love some recommendations.

Requirements:

Fun - no stead conservative quite places with fawning waitstaff
Meat - we both prefer big fat juicy rare steaks to most other things...
Price - can be cheap or expensive
Downtown or West Side - nothing midtown or upper east

I was thinking an argentinean steakhouse (where they just bring slabs of meat to the table) would be nice, but I don't know of any good ones in the city. Anything entertaining and delicious works for me though... :)

We are too low brow and unpretentious for that place. The post dinner drinking is a more important part of our evening... :p

Here is an example of a restaurant we have enjoyed: Sushi Samba

Excellent suggestion - I love that place! :)

But we eat too much Italian at home to go there for a special treat... :(

Assuming your wife is cool with this sort of thing. :)

If you havent already made up your mind on a place to go.. you can try Gallager's Steak House 228 W52nd street. I have never been, but my father has a lot of clients who love the place.

I don't live in NYC, but I was there for a whole summer and the best place to go is Ollie's (chinese restaurant) on Broadway. It is authentic, just all around nice Chinese food! It's on Broadway near Times Square.

Hope this helps!

brazillian bbq. more meat than you can shake a stick at. i linked the tribeca location which i've not been to. i've only been to the midtownWest location. though i can't imagine it would be that much different.

there's also that restaurant that's just across the brooklyn bridge that has the amazing view of the bridge and lower manhattan. it's supposed to be quite romantic.

I know the place you are talking about. It is either on a barge or looks like one, right?

My wife wanted to go to One if By Land Two if by Sea, but we never got around to it. If you can get reservations then try Per Se is in the AOL Time Warner Center next to V Steakhouse which is also excellent.

I ate there last November. The food is top-notch and the view (from any seat) is among the best in the city.

Eh, One If... didn't really appeal to me. Real nice looking place, but the food was 'eh'.
