i'm going to nyc this weekend for the first time. only thing planned so far is a picnic on the beach. any suggestions of things i shouldnt miss out on?

i'm getting there thursday night and staying till tuesday afternoon.

i will not be staying in long island... that's where we are going to the beach! i'm not confused... i really am going to nyc

my bro's girlfriend just told me to tell you that we are staying in SOHO and that should help...

a picnic on the beach? wth is that?

do the tourist thing. broadway show if you can get tickets, statue of liberty, times square... check out some of the great architecture too (St. Patrick's Cathedral, Empire State, Grand Central Station). another cool thing to do is take a boat tour. nice narrated tour of the waterfront and skyline.

Yeah, dont go swimming. Has he seen a big lake? The ocean is pretty much the same thing unless you go much further south (like the bahamas) and see the pretty blues.

there's the hudson river, but unless you want to waste a day and take a train to Coney Island, the beach / ocean is pretty inconvenient to get to.

visit Ground Zero and compare the view with a postcard with the towers still there. Then share the pain with the rest of us NYcityslickers

Wow, that's crazy that he's never seen the ocean before. I guess i take it for granted living in CA.

How is the ocean in New York? Is it warm during the summer?

Yeah, it's easier just going to the top of the ESB and looking at everything from up there.

my old house in brooklyn is an interesting site you should go to.

other than that, TKTS for broadway shows, walk through central park, maybe walk acorss the manhattan or queensborough bridge, get gorgeous views.

we're going to long island... my bro's gf said something about coney island....

i've seen the ocean plenty of times.... hawaii, california, florida

anything special happen in ny for the 4th of july?

Ground Zero has become a tourist attraction. Go to Time Square at night...it's more impressive. I don't think the Statue of Liberty is open, but I might be wrong. See a Broadway play (haha...I've never seen one and I live here!). If you're a movie buff, grab a frozen hot chocolate at Serendipity III or stroll by the New York Public Library. Then there are the museums, like The Met and Moma.

Um, Long Island != NYC

I agree with modeps go to The Carnegie Deli! nothing beats a sandwitch bigger than your head and a bowl full of pickles! Walk around times square and go into the shady electrionics stores. Walk up to the top of the empire state building (if you are still allowed). Umnmm statue of libery? also. Screw the dam beach. You want beaches go to atlanic city, you can see all kinds of dirty people AND you can gamble! Have fun!

that really... I dunno. grates me. I hate that it's become some kind of tourist attraction.

I worked at South Street Seaport during the summer of 2002, and started to hate every tourist who asked me for directions to the site.

There are plenty of beaches on Long Island, Long Beach for example is quite nice... However, you were asking about what to do in NYC. Long Island is not NYC.

liberty island is open... I don't know if the statue itself is, but that'd be easy enough to find out.

if you're going to be around, definitely watch the Macy's 4th of July fireworks. I'm really not into fireworks, but last year, I was working on a boat a few dozen feet down the river from where the fireworks were going off... they impressed the hell out of me. I don't think there's any fireworks show in North America that can even be compared to the NYC July 4th fireworks.

The water is still pretty cold.

I would take the helicopter tour of the skyline if I was visiting for first time. The helipads are off the west side highway near Chelsea piers (I think just south of them). They are REALLY awesome at night. But it's like $150 I think to get on.. but hey, you only live once 😀

this weekend there will be a fireworks display, the likes of which you will possibly never see again.

the best viewing places are in the 30's on the east side, iirc, but get there very early for best viewing options.

as for regular touristy type things, most have already been mentioned:

times square
empire state building
south street seaport
rockefeller center
statue of liberty
ground zero
central park
the met
the moma
lincoln center
united nations building
battery park
washington square park
broadway
