NYC schools have only closed 10times since 1978. Why do Va/Md/DC schools close more?

NYgets more snow and has equipment to remove snow. Places that don't get regular snowfall don't spend the money on snow removal equipment that may or may not be used.

Yep why spend many millions for things that rarely happen. It cost money to not only buy it but also store and maintain it.

Much cheaper to budget in a extra few snow days and just shut down from time to time.

School closings are getting more and more common. Even schools that traditionally haven't been that receptive to closing. Biggest increase in my experience is due to cold/windchill and not necessarily snow.

I'm sure there is some legal liability on schools with sue happy parents having their kids out at bus stops and walking in sub zero temps or windchills in the -20 or colder range.

But there are some places that simply are retarded when it comes to weather. I moved from Central IL to Central KY. If there's so much of a snow flake it's mass panic and delays. That's one of my most annoying ones. 2 hour delays. Not enough to get you to stay home. Just enough to fuck up your morning and have to shuffle around schedules and be a general pain in the ass. We also cancelled school because it was 0 zegrees. Wimps!

I had always thought that NYC didn't have very many snow days was because most kids/staff walk or take the subway to school. This storm is unique because of the threat of power outages.

Been down here a little while. Learned that Virginians are mostly wimps, especially with regards to weather.
They're good at talking shit though.

Lunch programs that students depend upon? Mass transportation that doesn't require driving on roads?

We're about 30-60 mins east of NYC and there are plenty of NYC teachers who live out here. We see them complain on local FB groups that they have to go into work. Understandable... they can't all get there by rail/subway.

already answered, they have the equipment to deal with snow removal

also for NYC travel distance is pretty small because of pop density vs say a more rural part of MD or VA. Also Pub transit

growing up in Maine we almost never canceled school, snowed all the time and we were prepared for it. it was a 30+ min drive from my house to the HS,

I grew up in upstate New York. It had to be BAD before they would close for the day. It was almost always a 2 hour delay for snowstorms.

growing up in the DMV area, i can tell you that DC schools closed probably 25% of the time that the MD/VA schools did. it just doesn't get as cold or as much accumulation in DC as it did in the MD/VA areas.

its still like that now (I live up here)

the only thing that really closes them is the freak shit like what happened in buffalo earlier in the year

A lot of MD schools serve kids out in the sticks, and the roads are more dangerous to navigate. All districts in a county need to be accounted for. Even if a majority of the county's schools are served by good roads, you have to deal with the others. Hereford zone in Baltimore county has its own closing standards, but it's the only subdivided county I'm aware of.

I can relate to this but a little different perspective haha. I just moved from the Chicago burbs to Champaign and damn they SUCK at clearing the roads down here compared to up north! It's like a different world down here. They hardly use salt at all which definitely has it's pluses and minuses but they take foreeever to clear snowfall compared to where I'm from.

That's true - to an extent. But, they have snowfalls that result in schools closed that wouldn't even get the plows out of the garages. E.g., this morning, about 1-2" on the ground, no sign of a plow. I was the 2nd person to drive down my road today.

It's a bit different. Suburbs have their own municipal removal crews typically dedicated to their village/town/municipality. Most of them are landlocked and have a fairly established route and routine. Compare that to Champaign that has new housing and growth around the edges that they have to account for without necessarily having budgets increase to account for added growth. Then toss in that U/C is sitting completely bare assed out in the flats of IL nothingness and the wind can generate some nasty drifting without much effort. Takes more time from the trucks to keep those outside edge routes open for commuters to get in.

It's just a different situation.

I lived in Versailles for a few years. My favorite snow day was when my fair city closed the schools even though the roads were clear because people "were not able to get out of their driveways". People were too lazy to shovel.
