Not really a *hot deal* but I go to J and R all the time and evcerytime I go they have more stuff for guys like us who like to build there computers. I was there yesterday and the now sell rounded IDE and SCSI cables of all type, they have mobos, they have artic silver type thermal compound, they sell PSU, cases and chips, they have heatsinks for Intel and AMD. This is they only store in NYC that not only sells whole computer systems, (compaq, ibm) but also caters to people who like to build pcs. And the prices are pretty decent being that its a retail store. I picked up a 3 device, rounded LVD/U160 cable for 20 bucks, I could have gotten it cheaper maybe on line but its so convienient just pulling it off the rack. I almost bought the ATI 8500LE which has 128 megs ddr ram for less than 200 bucks but I am still happy with my GF3 Ti200.

I'm afraid for the more budget conscious people like me, I'm going to have to go for the parts online where it's a bit cheaper like newegg.com :)
The savings at the end can really add up.

Oh yeah, I visit J&R every now and then and I was wondering whatever happened to the game budget section where they sell games for like 10 bucks? All I see in place of that now are just some stupid PDA software. :( :|

Yes, J&R does have some quality parts. The prices are pretty decent, but you may be able to find some cheaper prices elsewhere. However, they have a pretty good return policy (used to be better in the past), and they have tolerable customer service (I had a bad experience). That's good enough for some people to pay a little extra.

Personally I will not shop at J&R unless its an absolute emergency, since they charge at full MSRP plus the 8.25% tax. On rare occasions they have really good bargains (like the Rio Volt SP90 for $39.99) but that deal was almost "once in a lifetime", and sometimes they have closeouts and customer returns that is pretty cheap.

Secondly, they treat all their shoppers as potential con artists/stolen credit card shoppers/shoplifters/thieves. I don't like going into a store where they'll check you from head to toe because of your looks.

Thirdly, their PM policy sucks. They say "We'll PM any price that is correctly advertised by major stores" but if your PM is more than 10% from their prices the salesperson will deny the request. They have lots of complaints on BBB as well. Refunds are limited to store credit minus 15% restocking fee even if its unopened.

With 19 Staples and 4 ODs in Manhattan, 2 'Circuit City's, 2 CompUSAs, and a new Bestbuy opening up at 6 Ave, I don't see a reason for going to J&R unless you have to make urgent purchases.

Some of what you say is true, but I still cant find ASII on any rack at the stores you mention. :) Their prices, IMO, are some of the best considering they are not a chain. That is why you are limited to store credit I guess. Most people who shop at J&R know what to get so they usually have no need to return anything. I am anxiously awaiting the opening of the new best buy on 23rd because I have never been to one. :) But I am a faithful customer to J&R. Musically they carry everything, the SW is priced right without having to wait for rebates or store specials. And now that they sell specialty computer items they are even better. I said in the first post that you can get stuff cheaper online, but the fact that I can walk into the store and get a rounded UWSCSI/U160 cable and not have to wait for a shipment from some online company, is pretty cool.

Exactly how I feel!! I agree with what swNYC says also. One time I was looking for a printer and asked some guy for help, and he didn't even say anything to me, just walked away. I only go to J&R to check out the stuff they have because I live a few blocks away.

I'll echo some of the sentiment around J&R's return policy:

IT SUCKS

First off - only store credit. Next - it's limited to 14 days. Finally - they'll give you a heck of a hard time trying to return anything.

I know some people abuse return policies - but I don't - and I legitimately returned an A/V receiver that did not do what the salesman claimed it would do (specifically - didn't have both coax and optical digital outs). You don't want to know what a hassle it was - and how ridiculous the price of the other unit I end up having to buy was, in comparison to other stores. I'd much rather have bought from elsewhere - but thanks to the store credit policy - not like I had a choice.

Never again...

Where's J&R? I need a rounded SCSI cable and finding computer stores in NYC is like searching for a needle in a haystack. Most stores are in Queens which is way too far for me to travel cause i live in the bronx.

woot, my school is only several avenues from that, hope it opens soon

the staten island bestbuy is pretty big, then again, it was the first best buy i've been to.

j&r really does suck, they haven't had anything good, except refurb scanners.

It's in lower manhattan, right outside of Ground Zero (sorry to bring this up) You should get your cable online...you can probably find a better deal.

Where's J&R?

Take the 4/5/6 train, and get out at City Hall. When outside, it's in the second or third building (you'll see the signs everywhere) to the right of Brooklyn Bridge entrance. It's directly across the City Hall's main entrance (across the small park).

Granted their return policy stinks, but, like I stated before if you know exactly what you need then J & R is great. If you are an average consumer and like to ask questions, then the chain stores are for you. I, for one only shop when I know exactly what I want. I never talk to salepeople and never ever go to them for anything this way they dont get a commision. I always hate it when I know what I want and actually have it in my hand and some sales jerk comes over and says "let me write that up for you." I tell them to screw off, no commision for you ya bastard! You didnt even help! :) Salespeople suck.

OT...but salespeople do suck! No offense to any1...but often times they are dumba$$es. Esp. the people in the pc dept. JR is kinda cool though i remember scoring a few packs of dysan 50 pack 650mb cdrs for $5 back in the day.

I've been going into J&R to look at allthe cool stuff for as long as i can remember, and before that i was drooling on their catalogs (1st grade?). They generally have very high prices and I dont trust ANY of their salesmen. They basically own the whole block on park row except for an odd hardware store crammed between all their storefronts.

Well like I said, it isn't really practically, budgetwise, to buy any major parts from them IMO. I have seen some of the prices on their speakers, CPU's, Video Cards and I was like... wooow *backs away slowly from the glass panel*. But I suppose if there's some minor parts that you need quick replacement with then it's ok to buy from them.

I still go into J&R regularly during my lunch break. They have a nice library of books upstairs :) Software prices are ok; not quite as bad as some of the prices I've seen on the hardware compared to other places.

I use to work like a few blocks from J&R and pretty much go there everyday during lunch time. When I need to get something, I ALWAYS go to J&R....................................................................NOT TO BUY.......................but to do research. :D. They have a lot of stuff. I go there try out the actually product, if its to my satisfaction, then I'll order it ONLINE!!! There prices are just too ridculous and don't forget about their stupid return policy. But one thing that they do now is pricematch.

my 2 cents.

if they change their return policy (like to CompUSA) then I might consider going there to have a looksi...if not, then CompUsa is still the place for me...there prices are about the same, occassionally one being cheaper due to sales.
