Theres a job opening in Jamaica, Queens that pays the same as my job now. IF I take it is the area a decent place to live around?

Is it somewhere I can have a car or will I have to give it up because of nowhere to park/other reasons.

Thanks.

rofl, you're not from around the area are you?

it's not all bad. look into Jamaica Estates. mostly jewish/italian/asian neighborhood (read very wealthy).
and you're not limited to living in jamaica either. bayside, little neck, great neck are all nearby (some of the wealthiest towns on the island/queens). you want to head north for the good neighborhoods, and away from the south.

so I'll take that as the area is a crap hole. I don't make enough to live in a rich part of town. I gotta figure out what do do with my car if I move there anyway.

I think I'm better off getting a job in Manhattan and living in NJ.

Thanks

probly right... if you don't make much, you won't be able to afford most of queens anyway.
the "downtown" area (by the F train) is pretty crummy, predominantly black.
go northeast a couple of miles and you're in one of the most wealthy and exclusive neighborhoods of queens, the estates.

fresh meadows is also nearby, a bit cheaper and also quite nice.
all the areas i'm quoting are very residential, almost suburban, so parking is not a big problem. you should be able to get a 1 br or studio apt for under $1k.

When I get from JFK to the city, you pass through Jamaica. Unless there is a nice area away from the freeway, Jamaica looks pretty bad. Where are you currently at right now? There are good nice parts of Queens and I do not think Jamaica is one of them.

Jamaica = face stabbings. No, but honestly, it's one of the top 5 worst areas's in the city. Especially the south side.

And Jackson Height's is disgusting.... I'd never eat there.

Fiddy if from Jamaica, Queens. In fact that is the only reason I've ever heard of Jamaica, Queens.

Isn't that the 'hood with really good Indian food...some of which you can't find anywhere else? I thought it was good anyway. I didn't care to look at the health board score. :D

I have relatives that live close to Jamaica and hate the neighborhoods out there. The only nice place by Jamaica is Jamaica Estates but it's crazy expensive there.

Whoever said that Jackson Heights is disgusting is just being stupid. They have the best indian food in NY there. I would never live there, but the food there is awesome.

I'm in Central NJ now, in a great part of Red Bank. I pay $800 and split a 4 bedroom house with all utilities included. I can afford $1200 after utilities and internet.

To answer OP's question, have you checked out some of the newer parts of Long Island City? Some friends of mine live in one of the new highrise apt buildings--they got a deal because they signed their lease pre-construction, but it is still relatively affordable, plus you're right on the river overlooking Manhattan (great views!) and you've got direct access to the 7 train (3 stops from Grand Central) as well as E and V.
