NYC People... ever rent a garage??

halik

Lifer
I'm trying to research all my options for my car before moving out there in July. I'd really like to rent my own garage (not parking garage spot) somewhere near by (brooklyn, queens etc.), but i guess I'd settle for anything, really.

Has anyone done this before? Also how's car theft in NYC? I have an A4 and i keep hearing stories of those getting stolen in jersey...

Yeah this was a funny thread ... it's it like upwards of $500 just for a car parking spot? Much less your own entire garage ... bwahhahahahaaaa

edit: lowered figure 😉

meh I've seen parking in manhattan for as low as 100 a month on craiglist... it's not that bad

In midtown manhattan, its going to cost you several hundred dollars a month for a garage spot. In queens, between 100-200. There is pretty much no such thing as renting your own garage around here. Never even heard of it.

Car theft isnt so much a problem in manhattan. If someone were to steal your car, theyd have to break in silently, and manage to get away through that damn traffic. Queens is a different story though...they will rob you like no tomorrow.

But if youre thinking of living in manhattan and keeping a car in queens, well...thats just retarded.

Trust us, it is. If you saw such a thing on CL, it was either a lie, gone by the time you read it, a bait and switch, the person wasnt telling the whole story, or it was in harlem or another far away dump, which is still technically considered mahattan.

When I lived in Astoria, the buildings next to the train on Astoria Blvd rented their garages for $200 or $300. That was 3 years ago.

I know people in Brooklyn who rent garages, but I've never heard of it in Manhattan. Who has a garage in Manhattan?

every once in a while you can find people renting their garage. I paid about $75 a few years ago to park at this garage a block away from me.

you can also try to find a spot at some of the buildings that rent out parking, but they tend to be expensive. my father pays about 140 or 150 a month and all the cars are usually monitored by security.

that's what i meant. I don't need immediate access to my car, it just needs to be fairly close.

I rent my outdoor parking space in downtown Brooklyn for $300. I doubt you can find anything cheaper than that in a semi-convenient part of Manhattan.

But thats the thing. There are places to park that wont cost a fortune, but theyll either be very far, or very bad neighborhoods.

Most of brooklyn is a dump. The parts that arent a dump, are going to be either too expensive or too far away.

The problem is that you want to live in manhattan. Manhattan pretty much means not rich=no car.

Are you REALLY willing to travel upwards of an hour (and thats what its going to be, trust me), just to get to your car? And pay several hundred dollars for the priviledge? If youre living in mahattan, what makes you think youll even need a car in the first place?

Personally, I'd put the money that would be spent on garage rent and (ohmygod) insurance and just rent a car whenever I needed one.

It's really not about needing a car... I want it. I don't mind taking the subway for 20 mins to get it (an hour train ride will get me to middle of long island...)

I have too much invested in the car to the point that it makes it worth while to keep it around and pay for parking. I'm keeping my permanent residence in MI also, so I'm not gonna pay your NY-SH!TTY-DRIVER insurance premiums

hahahahahahHAHAHAHAHA!!!

alright bit of a stretch... but for all practical purposes an hour train ride gets me decently far from the city. IIRC it was 45min to get to Long Beach which seems pretty suburbian

If you're keeping your car in NY, your car should be registered and insured in NY. To do otherwise is insurance fraud.

If that were true, every college student needs to register their car if they live on campus at an out-of-state school.

This is true. If you are willing to take a ride, you should figure out what train makes the most sense and drive out there and look around. For instance, if you can grab the L easily, you might be able to find affordable parking a stop or two past the Bedford stop, which is 5 minutes out of Manhattan. If you are serious, you can probably find something.

Well, that's true I suppose. College students are an exception, though, since they're usually dependents and their permanent residence is their parents' address. I'm assuming that the OP is out of school and no longer a dependent.

Graduating in the spring. There's no exception, both registration and insurance go by your permanent address and there's no stipulation that you have to change your permanent residence once you're no longer a dependant. My brothers is 29 and he keeps his address at my parents house too.

Plus keeping my address in michigan also gives me tax benefits.

Especially because you're not moving here permanently, I'd keep the car back in MI. It really isn't worth the trouble... and that's what it is... just a worry you don't need because frankly, you're not going to be driving it much. I'd say the same thing if you were rich... it's just the trouble of having it and worrying about it in NYC. I'm in LI and even I take the train out to Manhattan if I'm staying.

You'll want a car in Manhattan only if you plan on going around NJ, upstate NY, LI, etc. once a week or more...

What I'd recommend is for you to live the NYC life for a few weeks and see how you do. You'll quickly learn you can get most places without your car... this coming from a suburbanite.

NY-SH!TTY-DRIVER insurance premiums
You meant NY-DRIVER SH!TTY insurance premiums.
