New York City finds one in five adults has mental health problems

At least one in five adult New Yorkers suffer from depression, substance abuse, suicidal thoughts or other psychological disorders every year, according to a report released on Thursday ahead of Mayor Bill de Blaiso's new mental-health initiative.

New York City's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene expects to release the plan, known as NYC Thrive, by the end of next month. It is aimed at preventing and treating psychological disorders among the city's 8.4 million residents.
I wonder if treatment will be voluntary or mandatory?

Perhaps you can offer them some of your meds...

I think if you looked at almost any population of people for a year or so you'd find a comparable percentage of them having the occasional problem -- NYC is hardly alone in this. A good indicator of this is the suicide rate and as the link indicates NY isn't even in the top 20. In fact, the majority is in the south and west -- red states don't you know.

OK, so what was you point?

Have we determined what fraction of the adults in other major American cities suffer from mental health problems?

must be nice to be able to be so glib about this.
Write a check and make yourself feel better. Make it out to 'William de Blasio' or, Warren Wilhelm Jr. which is his real name.

He'll make sure it goes towards this problem.

Hmm, Warren Wilhelm, that sound rather Germanic. Well, no biggie, Obama has gone by a lot of names throughout his life too.

Sounds like he legally changed his name. So his "real name" is Bill de Blasio.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_de_Blasio
He eventually adopted his mother's family name of de Blasio because his father was "largely absent," and he wanted to embrace his Italian heritage.[17] In 1983, he changed his legal name to Warren de Blasio-Wilhelm, which he described in April 2012: "I started by putting the name into my diploma, and then I hyphenated it legally when I finished NYU, and then, more and more, I realized that was the right identity." By the time he appeared on the public stage in 1990, he was using the name Bill de Blasio, as he is called "Bill" or "Billy" in his personal life.[15] He petitioned to officially change his name to Bill de Blasio in December 2001, after the discrepancy was noted during an election.[17]

I think it's ironic that we have MUCH higher rates of depression than 3rd world shitholes. I mean how crazy it is that we are more depressed than people who have no running water or electricity, have to walk 10 miles for some dirty ass water to drink and have no idea if they will eat anything at all over the next few days. Oh yeah, their country, or their little corner of it, is likely ran by warlords that might show up and rape them, kill them or both in no particular order.

OP tries to paint paint NYC as some crazy part of the US - yet, other parts are so mentally disturbed, they are killing themselves.

Boomerang has been boomeranged, yet again.

Also, as crazy as NYC is, people keep visiting, moving AND living (the opposite of killing oneself) here. Maybe the states with such a high suicide rate should be more like NYC instead? It's keeping us alive and well.

And one is the mayor of one of the most important cities in the world while the other is the president of the United States. And in this corner we have...'boomerang', an anonymous little sniper on the internet.

This is news to nobody.

The big, unanswered question is whether NYC attracts the mentally ill or whether NYC takes normal people and makes them mentally ill.

Once again, NY isn't even in the top 20 states for suicide and the majority of the states with the highest rates of suicide are in the south and west!

So, by your logic I'd be forced to ask ... why are red states so much worse the blue states? You have an answer for that?

I think it makes them mentally ill since it has a 24/7 life where you're constantly busy.

You don't get much time to be happy with just your friends, family, hobbies.. even your time off is like a job.

Some love it, some hate it, most put up with it but yes it changes you and the less fun you have.. the more mental health is compromised.

Of course not everyone is whacko but not everyone is as "happy" with the 24/7 fast life.

Almost half of my friends in NYC have moved to Florida.

There is a documented link between suicide and atheism. As America becomes more rational and realizes that ALL religions are equally fictional, they will become unhappy atheists like myself. Humankind has a very bleak and unhappy future. The ability to delude ourselves into thinking there is meaning is fast evaporating. The death of religion will necessarily give rise to much mental illness and suicide. Having bitten from the fruit of knowledge, I can aver conclusively that it is very very very very bitter and unsatisfying.

Liberalism? 24% of Americans identify as liberal. That's almost 1 in 5. Liberalism is a mental disorder....and NY of all places. Holy crap, I think I know who they are. Call the ladder trucks, stat!!! ;)

Sorry, that not a logical comparison at all. Then number of people who commit suicide is a minuscule fraction of the population. Comparing those rates with mental health rates makes no sense. Why not compare uninsured driver rates or some other equally meaningless stat?

If 1/4 of the population really has mental health issues, that's

I wonder how it compares to the rates for people in other cities around the country.

Yes, my answer is that you're an idiot.

Suicide rate is a tiny piece of the puzzle, it's a barely noticeable blip on the radar of mental problems. And it's clearly understood by almost everyone (except you of course) that suicide doesn't really follow red/blue state lines and that the one study that claimed it did was pure bupkis conducted by a biased researched with a clear political agenda.
