NYC folks - drive to Yankee Stadium?

This is another in my series of "how dumb is this?" questions:

I've taken the bus down a couple of times to the old stadium...but I haven't been to the new Yankee Stadium yet, and we were looking to get down for a game from upstate NY.
We'll be coming down 87 from Albany, probably for a weekday game, hopefully an afternoon game.

So we can drive all the way to the stadium via the GW or TZ bridge, or, drive down to the NY/NJ border somewhere within about 15 miles, and take the bus/train in and then back out. I've never driven in NYC before. Which is less stupid, ATOT?

Parking isn't that bad at Yankee Stadium. Parking prices range from $35 - up I think.

The problem is LEAVING when the game is over. Expect to take an hour just to get past the Cross Bronx exit (which is literally 1/2 mile away) if the Police even let you onto 87.

After that it's pretty much smooth sailing back. Avoid going back home on the GW. Tappanzee is further away but may end up saving you much more time in the long run. Besides, 87 from Yankee Stadium to TPZ is a fun ride. 🙂

It's real easy to get to Yankee Stadium via GWB/TZ- I wouldn't even consider it anything like driving in NYC since it's so close to 87. Question is are you willing to bend over and pay $35 for parking?

yeah I don't care how much parking is....I'll pay for convenience in this case.
I guess I figured I'd be able to hop right back on 87 and get out of there. Why wouldn't I be able to get back on? It sounds like driving is a better option than parking at Tarrytown or someplace and taking a train in.

As long as the game doesn't end in rush hour don't worry about the traffic getting out. At most its a 10-15 minute delay to get on the Deegan going north. Not only do they have a well built road system to the stadium a lot more people are getting there by subway or Metro North railroad.

Of course if you don't want to fight the traffic you could always just score some crack after the game.

Depending on the amount of traffic backup, they may force you onto the local streets and then you'd have to find your way back to the highway. It's not hard at all, but can be frustrating for someone not from the area.

Take metro north down? I'm from Albany and I always took the bus down, but now I live in CT and take the metro down and you end up right at E153 st and walk right in. I *think* metro north has trains that run from Poughkeepsie down to NYC, so if they do, I assume you could find one that runs right to E153 st like the one I take in. You'll probably get there faster if you drive down to P'keepsie and train in, then train back to P'keepsie and drive back to Albany.

P.S. I was just back in Albany this weekend..I don't miss the traffic one bit.

I have a theory about NYC in that all the cab companies are run buy the mob, and they put so many cabs on the streets you can't drive, therefore you're forced to take a cab everywhere.

It's not so terrible, I do it all the time. Get there early if you dont want to miss any parts of the game. But stay off the Deegan. Take the GW, get on the Harlem River Dr., take the 155th st. exit, make a left at the light on to 155th, and take the Macombs Dam Bridge.
