NYC: Car Across The Street Just Burst Into Flames

My mom and I were doing some grocery shopping at the supermarket on 59th and 1st. We come out with the groceries and see a car parked across the street smoking a little, like the engine was busted. (Car pulled over/now double parked). Then, maybe one minute later, the whole car was in flames. I mean everywhere. Hood, front seat, back seat. And this idiot was trying to get his stuff out of the car.

We were under a mini tunnel and the whole tunnel started filling up w. smoke. I called 911 as soon as I saw flames to report the fire. We got out of there after our groceries were loaded and the light turned green. By then, a car parked next to it (at a meter) was in flames and I feared there was about to be an explosion. Smoke could be seen from 30 blocks away as we headed up 1st avenue.

But I did get a pic before we left. From a camera phone but not bad. Fire.jpg

What kind of response time does the fire department have? I think about 3 mins expired from when I placed the call until we left. And when I got the fire dept on the phone through 911, he said "They are on their way" like they had already gotten a call about it.

NYFD is pretty good IMO. even when they are grocery shopping they drop everything and run to get a call.
I would certainly hope that the NYFD wouldn't put grocery shopping above saving a human life.

Saw something like this in a shopping center parking lot about a year ago, a little north of NYC. When we were leaving, we saw lots of smoke (white, IIRC), so we drove over to look. There were some flames coming out from under the hood. We and lots of other people stopped to watch it develop into flames shooting out from under the hood to the entire car on fire. The FD showed up, but I don't remember if they foamed it or just watched it burn. The adjacent cars didn't catch fire, but they were definitely scorched.

We were close enough to hear the owner and driver of the car giving their story. The car apparently had a gas leak that the owner was aware of, but he lent it to his friend without telling him. The driver definitely said, "If I had known about that, I wouldn't have borrowed your car. I would have taken the train!"

While we were looking for the source of the smoke, there were a few security guards running around with handheld radios, so we assumed that 911 had been called.
