NYC Cable + Internet: Cablevision or Time Warner?

New apartment in Park Slope, Brooklyn.

Getting a basic/family cable tv package($30 or so) and cable internet. DSL not an option because we're probably not getting a phone line.

Which company would be better? I heard Optimum Online kicks Road Runner's a$$.


Does anyone know if Food Network comes with the basic/family packages? I dont want to have to order digital cable.

optonline does kick rr's ass. plus you can get the optimum voice thing in the future if you want. Beware though, they give u a very whack 347 area code.

If optonline in the city is anything like what it is on long island, definitely go with that. I've been getting 10Mb/1Mb for 4+ years now, no downtime or slowdown ever.

OOL definitely. Time warner is all over the nation and so they are too big to give a fsck honestly while cablevision is much smaller compared to TW so they give better customer service...

Theres no need to go for optimumvoice. There are other VOIP carriers that you can switch to. Voicepulse is better than optimumvoice so you can go with them, there is also Voicepulse.

Packet8 sucks except for the fact that it's cheap.


But with Voicepulse, Broadvoice, Packet8, Vonage, and every other company I can think of they'll give you a 212, 718, 917, 914, 646 or whatever area code you want pretty much, and they have virtual numbers also.

Yup, decided to move to park slope. Subway is close, short ride to work. Neighborhood seems ok, close to everything.

OOL is #1 in America. (Shaw Cable was #1 in Canada)

They also give you an introductory $29.95/mo. rate for the first 6 months if you "install" it yourself - took 1 minute after the tech guy put the cables in place. I don't think you need to consider this any longer.

Are you planning on getting IO digital also ? Cablevision now has quite a few HD channels... they had CBS, FOX, HBO, MSG, FoxSports but have recently added NBC, PBS, SHOW, and 1 other. I wish they would hurry up and add ABC / ESPNHD... but at least they're showing progress. Comes out to $65/mo. for tv and $45/mo. (reimbursed) cable for me. I hate that they're basically a monopoly here though.

I thought my cable provider was good but I didn't think they were #1 in America. From that bandwidth test, I usually get 4.1Megabits per second.

hate to break it to ya... but there's no option. It's either TWC or OOL... if your area is serviced by TWC, then it's RR for you... if it's serviced by CVC, then it's OOL.

They were rated #1 by dslreports.com last year. I can't seem to find the link for now... let's see....

Sorry. In park slope, your only choice is RR unless things have recently changed.

BTW, the food network is a standard channel through TW. You don't even need to subscribe. Just plug into your TV.
