I'm 70 miles from NYC, but would help if you had no other way.
Let me know if freedomsbeat has limited success.

haha, I'm just getting my good deed of the week out of the way so I can go clubbing on friday :) ok, I'm not going clubbing on friday but, yeah, it's not a big deal at all. I'll give your friend a call around 5-ish and work something out.... It'll be tricky since I'm not sure what hardware he has and am not sure how I'd get the drivers if his i-net is down... But, yeah, I'll lend him my broken laptop (the lcd is cracked but it works when hooked up to a monitor) tonight and will at least jot down all of his hardware today.

Please make sure he backs up all of his important data and that he has all of his CDs (programs, drivers) handy.
Thanks!

P.S. Please have someone there with your friend to serve as partly a witness and partly to protect him - I don't want to go into a situation only to help but then walk away accused of something, know what I mean?

I'm also adding my name and email address here - sam sundaram jr. sam@slackerinabox.com ... If I'm never heard from then tell my parents that I love them! ;)

Both my friend Jay, and my disabled friend Jonothan, will be there so you should be safe :)

I certainly appreciate the laptop offer, but that is way too much to ask.

Jay will be looking for your call around 5:00 .

Thanks so very very much again !

Eh, I don't use the laptop at all... I doubt he'd pawn it off on ebay considering I know where the dude lives (and my cousin's a marine and can kick ass on command ;) ) I'll hopefully be able to fix his rig tonight but at least he'll have a way of checking email and such if I can't figure out what's wrong tonight.

edit: hahaha, see how karma works? I had no plans tonight but I immed my ex letting her know that I'll be in her neighborhood (she goes to columbia) and she invited me over for dinner and american idol viewing... I'd have a boring night at home if I didn't offer to help your friend - I should be thanking you! :)

Good luck fb. If nothing worse, at least the guy has some good company.

As mentioned earlier, if you can't quite fix things, some virtual networking with one of our resident techies could help.

FreedomsBeat ... you've got a PM. I think there must have been some phone number confusion.

Hey Ben,
Just an update- I just got home from Jon's place - what a pleasant guy! I did a clean install of Win XP, installed all of his drivers, and set up all the accessibility options - he's good to go. (Modem, soundcard, etc. work now). Jay will be installing all of the other programs since he insisted that I head home (spent three hours there and I live about an hour from there).. Jay's a dope guy as well -please keep my info handy in case they need further assistance.

Jon mentioned that he needed a new computer - I don't think that he does. I suggested that he get some more ram from NewEgg but they may forget since I was in a bit of a rush... 256mb more of PC133 ram will do them wonders- I'll gladly install it if they need any help with that...

Take care and please let Jay and Jon know that it was great meeting them and that they should not hesitate to email me if they need any future help.

-Sam
Jon also mentioned that he hated MSN and wanted a real ISP - I don't use dial up but PeoplePC.com offers access at 1/2 the price of MSN..

its great to see that this had such a nice ending. I felt badly for not offering my services, but I am not some techie guru and would've needed some help on the phone prolly.
