For all ATers with computer skills:

My friend has just moved to NYC. One of the first people he has met is a man with severe cerebral palsy.

The man's name is Jonothan, and he is extremely disabled.

Jonothan uses his computer to support his disabled lifestyle. It is a major resource in his day to day life.

Unfortunately Jonothan's computer has crashed and he needs someone with computer knowledge to get him up and running.

Besides my friend who has just moved to NYC, and who knows noone, Jonothan has no friends.

I appeal to all of you who can offer any help to please please PM me.

It would only require a few hours of your time. And it would mean the world to this person.

Thanks,

Polm

UPDATE (0.1):

Here is more detailed info concerning the problem.

Jonothan attempted to restore windows XP to his new Dell computer. Now his Jostick, Soundcard, Speech Software, and hist favorite Train Simulator game will not work.

I will begin to create a running list of interested ATers. I will try and prioritize based on proximity and availability. I will then setup contact with Jay in NYC to coordinate times to go help Jonothan.

Thanks everyone !!!!

UPDATE (0.2):

FreedomsBeat has offered his services, and if all goes well he will be helping out this evening. THANKS FREEDOMSBEAT !!!

And thanks to everyone else at AT for your help.

UPDATE (0.3):

FreedomsBeat has fixed the problem ! **CONFIRMED** FreedomsBeat is the MAN !!

polm, do you happen to know what "exactly" needs to be done to make Jonothan's computer up & running?

At this point it is difficult to say.

Jonothan cannot speak. He uses speech recognition from his computer to talk, and as of now that does not work at all.

My friend, Jay, has absolutely no computer skills. He has assisted Jonathan in an effort to "Re-Install" XP Home. This has failed...but I suspect major Operator Error on Jay's behalf and a frustrating, and unsuccesful effort to relay instruction from Jonothan.

I would suspect a re-install of XP home as well as the speech recongition software will be necessary.

Upper West side of Manhattan.

Exact directions are available through my friend, Jay, in NYC. He is available for phone contact 24/7. I have the phone numbers.

I can't directly help, but if there is anything you think you'd need help in including financial help, let me know, I'm sure some ATers would be glad to donate a little bit of money if it's needed

I'm not a computer genius, but I'd be glad to help if I can and your friend can make it through the week as I've got a lot on my plate this week polm.

If your friend could wait a week or so, I might be able to lend a hand next weekend.

Don't give me a beer yet! I must warn you though, your idea is a very sweet one but I worry about an evil ATOTer taking advantage of your friend.. I'd get the volunteers name and number and then contact them over the phone or something.. just don't give our your pal's address - someone may take the computer home for "diagnostics" and then never return!

Definitely. If I was still in NYC, I'd do it. My Mom is about a 30-minute train ride from there.

Bump and good luck.

Bump til sticky.

I'm not religious, but I believe that this is how God keeps score. You do something like this...take care of this person...and that's how "you get the stars" next to your name.

I know if I was incapacitated I'd be begging for someone to reload my computer. :(
