NY Police behind large prostitution ring

Police corruption in New York City has long revealed its share of notorious characters — the rookies working as muscle for drug dealers, the veteran investigators in the pockets of Mafia bosses, the shakedowns and favors and kickbacks.

But Mr. Paz, as portrayed by prosecutors, represents an unusual breed: a vice detective who kept a clean record until he retired, only to pivot hard and use his law-enforcement background to become the very strain of crime lord that he once was supposed to stamp out. His years wearing a badge in Brooklyn, the police said, would prove to be on-the-job training for a second career as a purveyor of prostitutes and protector of pimps.

“Because of his familiarity with the tools of the trade and vice — and how to investigate these kind of enterprises — he kind of became expert,” said a law enforcement official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the case. “He figured, wow, he can make a lot of money.”...

Cops and hookers have a centuries long relationship. The two professions simply go together.
Prostitute gives money to Pimp who then gives some to a Cop to keep business working. Seriously this has gone on for Centuries.
Not saying it’s right, just saying it’s been there for like forever.

So this guy wasn't an LEO when he changed to a life of crime, correct? If not, then it's not 100% legit to lay this on the NYPD like tthe thread title says.

Incorrect. If you read the article he had some accomplices within the NYPD in on this.
The retired detective, Ludwig Paz, 51, was arrested and accused of running a broad and complex syndicate of prostitution and gambling that spanned Brooklyn and Queens and brought in millions of dollars. Three sergeants, two detectives and two officers were also charged. Two other officers were stripped of their guns and shields and placed on administrative duty. Dozens of civilians were arrested, and more are being sought.

Fair enough. I didn't read the whole article. Been up since midnight, so I'm a bit lazy right now lol. Thanks!

Yet another reason why prostitution should be legal.

Aside from the additional jobs to cops, lawyers, judges, prison guards, and black market beneficiaries, are there any actually legitimate reasons for prostitution to be illegal?

I don't count any. The reason it's illegal, IMHO, is based almost entirely on perceived morals of yesteryear.

I don't think so, as long as it's well regulated and under oversight to protect the prostitutes.

I am actually morally opposed to prostitution, but I can't come up with a reason that it should be illegal and lives should be ruined for participating in it.

I like that you can hold your own opinion on morality and not let it interfere with what you think should be legal.

Very few can make the distinction so kudos to you for being able to.

Sometimes I feel like a poorly thought out fight against immorality can result in a far more immoral outcome that the immorality it was designed to fight in the first place. In this case it would leave a trail of ruined lives, ruined financial futures, increased trafficking, a violent and powerful/evil black market, and increased taxes in order to achieve all of these failures.

Society is pretty corrupt and nasty thanks to seedy liberals spreading gay ideals and promoting full frontal nudity of women on TV. Conservatives are also not blameless by abusing the tax system that allows landlords to make slaves of tenants instead of allowing them to become legit homeowners!

The last thing we need is legalized prostitution - for if it were legalized you would have men depreciating women for tax purposes!!!!

F- that!

And here we have the example of what happens when too few IQ points meets "my morality should be the basis of legislation and regulation of all aspects of society" all while turning a blind eye to his Church's own supported and enabled sexual abuses of little boys.

A practical minded person would ask himself if a woman without any protections is better off without legalization or if it would help her and her situation but not a fundamentalist like this guy. He may play pretend to give a fuck about the women but he really just want them to suffer as much as possible because that is who he is.

I'm stunned that the New York Police union members and their bureaucracy may be involved in sexual trafficking. Stunned I tell you.

I don't understand your argument at all. Why is sex work any different from being a masseuse or a chiropractor or nail salon artist other than longstanding social stigmas mostly rooted in religion and sexism? I'm all for regulating work if there is a practical purpose behind it but how we view the sex industry currently is without any sort of rational thought process. As it stands, you can pay an 18 year old woman to have sex with you and like 10 of your friends if you promise to eventually put it on the internet but if you pay a 45 year old woman to have sex with you and don't have a pre-existing agreement to put it on the internet that's a crime.

Is there a lesbian full frontal nudity channel that I am unaware of?

It seems to me a whole new set of regulations need to be in place before legalization takes place, especially in the area of health concerns, tax accountability and the influence of organized crime on the industry.

Other than that, the usual flailing and threats from the evangelicals/fundamentalists need to be dealt with on the political level of things.

Me, I could care less for I don't believe it's within my beliefs that I should force my feelings/beliefs on others like some of those holier than thou's that are always looking to do just that through the legislature and courts.
