Thoughts? :) Looks like a good deal for the Mets.

espn.com:

<< New York sent Cleveland outfielder Matt Lawton, outfield prospect Alex Escobar, pitcher Jerrod Riggan and two players to be named -- one is believed to be minor-league pitcher Billy Traber, the Mets' No. 1 pick in the 2000 draft -- in exchange for Alomar, left-hander Mike Bascik and first baseman/outfielder Danny Peoples. >>

Once again, the rich get richer. Although I do think Alomar is somewhat overrated.

Anyone heard what we are doing with Justice...latest rumors I heard was that he was just bait for another trade going down with some American League team.

I'm pulling for David Wells to come to the Mets. He's a cool guy and a hell of a thrower. Might be able to get him a little cheaper than he should be since the surgery has put some question marks above his head.

I like Alamor, but why did they trade Escobar. For 2 years now, that is all they have been talking about...the hot, great prospect Escobar...and then all of a sudden they trade him. I thought a couple teams were trying to get him last year but the Mets wouldn't let him go.

Holy sh1t!!!, I'm glad I woke up to read the forums, I was dismayed about sending Ventura, a player with dramatics for the Mets, to the Yanks a few days ago... but atleast they're making some moves this year!!! LETS GO METS!!!!!!!!!!!!

All the best to Escobar, I mean, he might not be a Met anymore, but I hope he finds his place somewhere. The kid can play! :)

Speaking of Escobar, have the Mets been able to develop any homegrown talent and keep them? This is something that the Yanks excel at, but I dunno who on the Mets is really homegrown. I guess Edgardo Alfonso is, but who else? Granted, they've lost a lot of good talent like Burnitz and Isringhausen.

I think it's a good deal for the Mets. I do think that they need to get a good pitcher. The pitching hasn't been the same since Hampton left.

Alfonso lives in Whitestone? i never knew that. I'm there all the time, maybe i can pass by and say hello:D

why trade escobar?, well the mets have the great history of trading good players for some reason, although alex was doing pretty bad when he came up from the minors, but burnitz and cedeno, are two outfielders that they could have used last year, but they traded them away,
anyway the deal the mets need to make now is getting juan gonzalez, he is the offense the mets need, and he will take some of the offensive burden off piazza, imagine having to face alomar, alfonzo, piazza, and juan gone in a row, life would be sweet

its really hard to say i dislike having alomar on our team, but its gonna piss of fonzie...he already said since this is his last year on his contract that he does not want to play third base, but phillips doesnt seem to care. Hopefully fonzie will learn to love it again real fast.

this also takes us out of the running for any possibility for gonzo or bonds i think, so unless we get alou or trade for burnitz, our outfeild will still be pretty sad. Unless justice has a great year.

as for mets youth talent, we also brought up ordonez and payton.

linup so far...

agbayani
fonzie
alomar
piazza
justice
zeile
payton
ordonez

i still think we need more to happen this off season

problem is that the mets have said they would not be able to afford gonzo without unloading lotsa salary $...idont htink getting alomar's $8 million is gonna help that...notsure how much we were paying lawton, but i doubt 8mill

Didn't agbayani get sold to a team in Japan?

Oh and why trade Escobar? Well you have to give something in order to get something. Besides people were starting to think that he wasn't going to be that good anyway. This way you are sure to get a good player instead of waiting to see if Excobar will live up to his billing and most likey he won't be as good as Alomar.

Definitely a good trade for the mets. I think they'll make one more blockbuster trade before it all gets settled this off season. I don't see Justice staying around...

i agree that it was a good trade for the mets...i think thats why they made it, since i dont believe they were pursuing alomar, but basically lawton and someone who hasnt proved himself for one of teh games best 2nd baseman...thats a no brainer

i just fear we have pissed off fonzie with this...hopefully phillips talked to him last night beforehand

as for agbayani, last i heard they were thinking of selling him, but nothing had been completed

Alomar is one more loser on a team of losers who believe mediocrity is acceptable. With or without Alomar, the Mets are, at best, a .500 team.

The Mets still need to do more, but Alomar is one of the greatest players of all-time, period. I would guess that they will move Zeile if they can, and Payton/Agbayani are very average players, they need more bats in the OF...Juan Gonzalez makes perfect sense, but we'll have to wait and see about the cash situation...Justice is going to go back to an AL team, possibly the A's...Alomar hitting third in front of Piazza will be nice for the Mets...

The Indians on the other hand accomplish two things...lower salary, some OF's who can play a bit....Lawton is an excellent player, but not in Alomar's class...he steps into RF for the Tribe....Escobar? Jury is still out on him....Riggan helps their bullpen, since Baez is going into the rotation...one of the two players to be named later, Trowers (Towers?), is a highly regarded LHP prospect, the Mets #1 pick last year...

Don't be surprised if the Tribe makes more moves, like trading Fryman or Vizquel, and now they need a 2b as well, but don't give up hope yet Tribe fans....CC, Colon, and Baez should be a formidable top three in the rotation, and Wickman/Shuey/Riske helps as well...maybe they can get a 2b prospect for Rocker....

what the mets need to do is give away justice and zeile...just get rid of their salary...trade them to the devil rays for like 2 prospects, dont even have to be good prospects...

then sign gonzo with all the money they will be saving...

then u have an outfield of payton, agbayani/shinjo, gonzo and an infeild of fonzie, ordonez, alomar...pretty damn good...anyone can play first, hell my mom could play first with that infeild, and she could bat right before ordonez.

also piazza could get rest and play first every once in a while

we could also try and get cedeno for OF

People don't realize Zeile was playing in pain last season. He had bone chips removed from his elbow after the season, so he might be able to bring those sad numbers up. It's hard to get rid of a guy with a big salary like his and his inconsistent play. There was a rumor going around about sending Zeile, Payton, Lawton, and/or Escobar for Mo Vaughn and I forgot the outfielder with the Angels. However, that has to be changed now :) I still think during the World Series in 2000 that Zeile was one of the best hitters for the Mets.

Great trade by the Mets. They get a hall of famer that still has at least 3 good years in him. Can you imagine an infield of Fonzie, Ordonez, and Alomar? The pitchers are going to be happy...

Escobar was probably the MOST overrated prospect in baseball. He may turn out to be a good player, but I guess they wanted to trade him while his value was still high.

Riggan will be a good setup man, but I think he will be easily replacable by the Mets, probably by White or Roberts. They also have guys like Cammack and Corey, so Riggan was expendable.

The one announced PTBNL is Billy Traber, one of the Mets top 5 prospects. He was probably their best LHP prospect, but there are some concerns about injuries to his elbow (?). Still, I think he's projected to be around a #2 or #3 pitcher. The Mets actually have a lot of decent minor league pitching with Heilman, Seo, Strange, Musser, Gonzalez, etc. so the loss of Traber isn't huge.

As long as the other PTBNL isn't Heilman or Jose Reyes, I'll be happy.

Mets just added Roger Cedeno and wooing Juan Gonzalez, pretty intimidating line up if ya ask me...
Cedeno
Alfonzo
Alomar
Piazza
Justice or Gonzalez
etc

Benny looks like will be pimped off to Japan for a pitcher.
With ny football and weak knicks around... is anyone else like me lookin' forward to spring training?
