NY Mets 2006 : A Thread to Remember

Al Neri

Diamond Member
Well, with a month and change left until the season starts, it's time for a new thread.

C Paul Lo Duca
1B Carlos ("C-Del") Delgado
2B See below
SS Jose Reyes
3B Mr. David Wright
CF Carlos ("C-Bel") Beltran
LF Cliff Floyd
RF Victor Diaz/Xavier Nady

Regarding 2B:
This season looks promising and we have a slew of 2B's ready to take the position. It seems like Boone has cornered the mets by stating he wont join a team as a reserve, Matsui showed up at camp with a new personal trainer (from the Seibu Lions, his old Japanese team)., Anderson Hernanez brings a AAA phenom season that in 19 at bats appeared as smoke and mirrors in the ML, and Jeff Keppinger, and when he had is only stint in the majors in 2004 as a fill in roll, in 33 games with 116 AB's he batted 284 with 3 home runs and stole 2 bases.

Regarding RF:
As far as the Nady/Diaz platoon, I'd really love to see Diaz get the go, I really think he can put up 280/20/90 type numbers, but lets see what Nady can do.

As far as the rotation, there's 3 locks:
Pedro Martinez
Tom Glavine
Steve Trachsel

Regarding the rest of the rotation:
Then, Victor Zambrano and Aaron Heilman are all but promised the final two spots... a few others including Yusaku Iriki, Jose ("It's Lima Time!") Lima, Brian Bannister, John Maine and Alay Soler are competing for starting rolls.

Regarding Relief Pitching:
The relief core looks solid and looks to be some mixture of Wagner closing, Duaner Sanchez setting up, Chad Bradford, a leftie SU (Royce Ring, Dae Koo, Darren Oliver), Jorge Julio, Heath Bell Steve Schmoll, Juan Padilla, Mitch Wylie, and Matt Perisho. Most of them competing for spots...

Regarding the bench:
They have a slew of bench players in Julio Franco, Jose Valentin, Endy Chavez, Ramon Castro, Chris Woodward, and those who don't get starting positions out of spring training.

LETS GO METS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think the OP should be kept in tact to see how much really changes in a season, so I will do updates in this post.

Alright then Senor Rodriguez... a new thread it is.

Spring Training is but a week away and I can't wait!

NOOO I liked keeping the other thread!! 🙂 I wanted to see how long it would go.

hehehe

a thread started by a braves fan but hijacked by mets fans? 😉

just kidding, i'm a braves fan but a baseball fan first.

The Mets have potential. I see it being a 1-2 between the Mets and the Braves in the East. Either team can take it.

That being said, barring health issues, NO team is better then the Athletics this year. I know a lot of you guys may not realize just how good that team is (due to the media's East Coast bias) but I don't see a team on paper that, overall, is a better team.

but for all the talk you hear about braves choking etc, i haven't seen the A's do anything in a long time either.

Reyes will explode even more this year.

Pedro less terrific but more wins.

I dont see beltran improving much.

Pitching will be overall very good.

Just miss the playoffs(WC to the brewers)

However, the question is WHY?

Why is a Canucks thread > * ??? I dunno..thats just what you think. Who cares about the damn Canucks.

If you have nothing to add to this thread then go to the Canucks thread and have fun there.
It has over 6000 posts, that's why it's > *.

Y'know..there are a TON of folks that pick the young Brew Crew to be the surprise team of 2006. I could see it as they were very competitive last season and now with Prince Fielder playing first, JJ Hardy getting more experience ..etc they could have quite a year. How long has it been since the Brewers were contenders?? Quite a while! Good for them!

You're right, but this team is NOTHING like the team a few years ago. Being small market, the A's are always losing "stars" and filling with "unprovens".

This year was different. The Athletics did not lose a single "star" and added some potentially great talent (certainly the question marks are there). This is the first year that I can remember them doing this. They had a solid team last year...so take last year's team + experience for the young guys + this year's additions and you have one hell of a team.

The A's have a good team, but mark my words, Zito will be traded (or the A's will be in discussions) around the all star break.

as far as the Brewers winning the WC... Sheets has to stay healthy, something i wouldn't count on.

Thank you for editing your post. You didn't have to be so nasty! 😉 If you want to talk Phillies baseball (you mentioned them) you are always welcomed to come here and talk about them. If you don't thats ok too.

Zito won't be traded if the A's are in the thick of things but who knows with Billy Beane. I'm sure if the A's are not contending he'll try to get all the best prospects possible from a contender and he will get them. No contending team will resist the chance to get Barry.

My logic behind my post is that they wont be in the thick of things!

just a comment on why I like the idea of just continuing the other thread. If we dont continue it wont it eventually disappear after a certain amount of time without posts...if we continue it we will have our own little history of the Mets as long as we keep it going

the Nats lost Brian Lawrence for a half of a year, makes our division a bit weaker. (not by much since Lawrence is, IMO, no more than a Trachsel-lite)

I agree. Mr. Braves (PlatinumGold) could just rename the thread if possible to the same name as this one and we can copy/paste Don Rodriguez first post to it.

Its up to the rest to decide but I'm for keeping the old thread (it has over 1000 replies!)..lets get it up to...mmm...10000!
