I'm a member of the Club for Growth and got an interesting email (pasted below). There's a special election happening in a couple weeks in NY for congressman. As a (mostly) libertarian, I'm hoping the fiscally conservative Doug Hoffman wins. Maybe this will be a little preview for the 2010 elections?
"Just yesterday the Club for Growth PAC endorsed Doug Hoffman, one of three candidates competing in a special election in New York's 23rd Congressional District. The Club's PAC cannot sit on the sidelines and watch a very liberal, tax-and-spend Republican or Democrat win this Congressional seat. We've seen enough of these types of candidates over the past few years - and it's precisely why Republicans in Congress are in the minority right now.
The special election, which is only a few weeks away (Nov. 3!), is a result of Rep. John McHugh's resignation to become Secretary of the Army. This is a three-way general election. There is a liberal Democrat, a liberal Republican, and a limited government, economic conservative running. This race won't be about party. It will be about principle. The Club for Growth PAC's candidate, Doug Hoffman, is a terrific pro-growth, limited government champion.
The Republican Party bosses in New York chose the most liberal Republican in the New York Legislature - State Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava - as their nominee. The Republican voters had no say in this matter.
If you think Arlen Specter has a bad record - well, you're in for a shock.
In truth, Dede Scozzafava gives new meaning to the term "RINO" - Republican in Name Only! As a New York Assemblywoman, Scozzafava voted to extend or raise taxes 190 times; voted for Democrat Governor David Paterson's 2008 -2009 budget which included $750 million in increased taxes and fees; voted for the "Millionaire's Tax"; and even voted to force all New York state government workers to pay union dues.
But it doesn't end there. Just like the Democrat Party's nominee, Bill Owens, Scozzafava has voiced her support for Big Labor's Card Check bill that takes away the secret ballot in a union election; supports Barack Obama's "stimulus" plan; and supports Cash for Clunkers.
The truth is, she would be a disaster in Congress - making Maine's Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins look like solid fiscal conservatives by comparison.
Fortunately, fiscally conservative voters in this district have a very good alternative in Doug Hoffman.
Hoffman, a Republican, decided to run as a Conservative Party candidate after local GOP party bosses hand-picked RINO Dede Scozzafava as their nominee.
Doug Hoffman is not a career politician. He's a successful and well respected entrepreneur who has created jobs and has experienced firsthand the chilling effect big government policies have on business and taxpayers in America. Hoffman's deeply held limited government principles and outrage over the fiscal crisis in Washington compelled him to enter this race. His willingness to go against the establishment is refreshing. He puts principle over party.
Hoffman offers a clear distinction among the candidates in this three-way contest. And he CAN win. There is polling to prove it.
A recent poll released by Club for Growth shows a statistical three-way tie between Hoffman, Scozzafava, and Owens!
Furthermore, when respondents were asked: "Would you prefer your next member of Congress be a liberal Democrat, a liberal Republican, or a Conservative party candidate who would align himself with Republicans in Congress," respondents selected the Conservative by 36%, compared to 31% for the Democrat and 18% for the Republican.
So, in this race, you and I must make sure the only pro-growth, limited government candidate in the race - in this case, the Conservative Party nominee, Doug Hoffman - wins.
We must send the big government tax and spenders on BOTH sides of the aisle a message they'll remember. Nominate a big government, tax-and-spend liberal and you WILL lose.
With your help, Doug Hoffman CAN win. But more importantly, I believe we MUST fight hard to win to send a message that we will not sit idly by while more RINOs are elected to Congress.
So please, give Doug Hoffman your most generous contribution. Let's send a message that the path to victory is true fiscal conservatism."
