Commuter ferry crash in New York injures 57, 1 critical



A commuter ferry crashed into a pier in lower Manhattan early Wednesday, injuring 57 people, one critically, the New York City Police Department said.


Passengers lying on stretchers littered the pier near South Street Seaport, attended to by firefighters and rescue workers who rushed to the scene of the 8:43 a.m. (1343 GMT) hard landing.


"People were thrown into the air and onto the ground," passenger Elizabeth Banta told CNN. "There were definitely many people on the ground who were not moving."

Television images showed damage to the side of one end of the ferry, called Seastreak Wall Street, which departed from Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey.


In October 2003, a Staten Island ferry crashed into a maintenance pier, killing 11 people and injuring dozens more, and the same vessel, the Andrew J. Barberi, was involved in a second accident in May 2010 that injured around 40 people.


The ferry pilot in the 2003 crash and his supervisor were sentenced to more than a year in prison each for their roles in the accident. The pilot, Richard Smith, had passed out at the helm.

Nobody needs ferrys that big. Ban them before more die from their use! Or, at least regulate them so heavilly that it is a burden to even take a trip on them. Also, a special "dangerous ride" tax should be imposed on those who legally want to board a ferry. Safety first, America!

Maybe there should be a law where all war tranport ferry passengers are required to pass safety and emergency training courses before allowed on the war transport? We need a law tracking all ferry passengers for the good of society and the children.

The founding fathers never imagined boats of such dangerously high capacity and means of death. Ban high capacity ferries NOW. If only one little child's life or scraped knee can be prevented then it's for the good of society.

Only the military should have such high capacity transport vehicles. There is simply no need for the regular citizen to have access to such a deadly military style water vessel.

Remember the mass ferry killings in 2003? The Stanten Island Massacre. How could we have allowed these high capacity vessels to remain is irresponsible. We need common sense ferry banning NOW!

The same high capacity assault ferry from the Stanen Island Massacre never was banned. And there were more mass injuries from the very same instrument of death later, many of them children.

On May 8, 2010, the same boat was involved in another crash. As the ferry approached the St. George terminal, the throttle failed to engage as it prepared to dock and crashed into the dock. The impact caused 37 injuries, one of which was serious.

The reasons for banning high capacity assault ferries are the same as the gun grabbers. Funny you don't see the parallel. It looks like high capacity water transports are responsible for more deaths and injuries than assault rifles. Focus legislation on where it would do the most help in preventing these senseless tragedies.

So let's get some meaningful common sense banning of high capacity military water transports.
