I'm watching it on CNN right now. The owners of the building are outlawing the tennents from smoking IN THEIR OWN HOMES?!?!

If the tenants are renting then sure the owners can do whatever they want. It might even bring down the insurance for the building. If you can ban dogs then why can't you ban smoking?

It's a fire hazard.

That is just for new tennants moving in. Existing residents can continue to smoke.

This is getting very common. My apartment building in Minneapolis went nonsmoking last year but existing tennants are grandfathered in. :)

As for fire prevention, my landlord specifically bans the burning of candles in his buildings. Personally, I feel safer because of it.

Actually, by definition of the owner/tennant relationship, the owner is outlawing tennants from smoking in the OWNER'S own homes.
It's a private establishment. As long as they don't discriminate against protected class, he can ban whatever he wants.

I smoke in my apartment. Have you ever stayed in a smoking hotel room? Even though they clean them, the smoke odor lingers in the carpet and furniture. Pipe smoke doesn't seem to linger the same way, but maybe I just don't smoke enough for it to happen.
Anyway, unless my landlord is planning on really cleaning the apartment, the next tennant may very well notice a faint pipe smoke smell after I move out.
The landlord is combatting this, and reducing the risk of fire. Landlord probably gets an insurance break for this.

their homes? I think it is the owners of the building that own the apartments.

This is the way it should be. Owners decide what they want to do with their business.

WTF? What's with all this stuff lately? Kicking people out for using drugs? I've been doing that for a while. Not allowing smoking? Never been allowed. Evicting someone for shoving tampons down the toilet when repeatedly told not to. Guess I'll see it soon too. I own it, I make the rules. You don't like it? Go live somewhere else.
