NWN2 issues - I guess I need a new video card?

So I went out today and bought NWN2. Loaded it up and tried playing - only to see "Could not find any compatible Direct3D devices. The application will now exit." :(

I guess my trusty old Geforce 4200ti can't handle it. So now it looks like I need to get a new video card. But I don't want to upgrade my entire computer, so it needs to be AGP. I haven't researched video cards since I bought the 4200, so I'm a bit out of the loop as to what is current and what is "old".

What's a good AGP card to get? I found this one which looks good to me, but I don't even know what to look for anymore.

My system's other relevant specs are: AMD 64 XP2800+ CPU, Gigabyte GA-K8NSNXP mainboard, 2 GB ram, Antec True480 PSU.

Thanks in advance for any help!

yeah that would do ya nicely. If you can hang on i believe someone is doing an x1950 pro AGP, or was that just a rumour?)

I searched around a bit and saw something about that...but I would imagine that'll be pretty expensive when (if?) it comes out, so probably not gonna go that route. What's a 7800GS comparable to in terms of ATI cards? x1600?

Thanks. I looked around a bit more, and it doesn't look like I'm going to do any better than the one I linked above for the price range I'm looking at, so I placed the order. Hopefully that one will last me until my next planned major upgrade a few years from now.

That is a stellar card for someone needing an AGP card.

I put that exact card in my sister's box I built for her last week and it freaking SMOKES.

Someone should have read the NWN2 system requirements before they bought it. It does require a DX9 video card.

And since you've got an AGP platform, your options are fairly limited. Your only choices are a few overpriced stop gap cards, such as the 7800GS. It costs more than the 6800GT/Us it replaced, and delivers similar performance. You could wait until the 1950Pro AGP card hits the market, if it ever does, and if its sold for the right price, but odds are it will cost more than the PCIe version.

buy a PCI-E version of your mobo and get a PCI-E card, they are MUCH cheaper than their AGP counterparts!

edit: do you have an A64 or just a regular AXP? if AXP, you're out of luck, but A64 you can definitely get a PCI-E mobo.

I would just wait for the AGP X1950pro to come out and save up for it and get it.

Of course, that BFG 7800GS is a good option, but I would still look at the X1950pro AGP.

Yeah, I admit that it was my fault for not reading the system reqs. I don't really buy games that often, and I honestly didn't even think of it when I was in the store - up to now, the 4200 has been able to play everything I've thrown at it.

But, it was probably time to upgrade anyway - I've had that 4200 in there for at least 3 years now. I know AGP is a dead-end, but if I can squeeze a few more good years out of my system before a complete replacement, I'll be happy.

I have an A64, but it's socket 754 (not 939). Seems 754 is kind of the bastard stepchild of the A64 lineup, as there isn't nearly as much support for it. When I do upgrade the mobo, the processor will be upgraded as well. I figure it's better to spend $200 on an AGP card now then ??? on a new mainboard, processor, and card. Besides, the motherboard was replaced not long ago - would like to get a little more use out of that as well..

ECS S754 NF4 + Biostar 7900GS, which will own the AGP 7800GS

grand total: $200 AMIR for a MUCH faster video card :)

Get this X1950pro instead of the 7900GS for $200. It's even faster than a 7900GS.

i was trying to keep the budget at 200, but if he's willing, an x1950 pro is definitely a better solution :)
