NWN2 boasts Sun Elves, Moon Elves, Wood Elves, and Drow Elves. The four major Elven races from the 3e Forgottom Realms. If you've read the 3e FR campaign settings, the potential for RP and story between the 4 is staggering.
The Moon Elves rule Evermeet, and wield the powerful moonblades (semi-sentient, hereditary broadswords). Sun Elves believe they should be ruling the Elvish people and the extremist fringe have been involved in a number of plots to overthrow the Moon elf queen of Evermeet, Amlauriual<sp>. The Wood elves are extremely reclusive, almost never seen by the other races, elves included. The Drow have moved from the Underdark to the surface, establishing several settlements on the surface in the forests surrounding the ruins of Myth Drannor. Usually they worship Vhaurun<sp>, the sole male Drow god, whose portfolio includes thievery. A few of these surface Drow do worship Ellastrae, the sole good aligned Drow goddess. The story behind Lloth, Ellastrae and Vhaurune is detailed in the book 'Evermeet' A good read.
Edit - There's also no one forcing you to play an Elf. There's plenty of other races to play. I, for one, am glad to see a developer implementing features from the 3e rule books and campaign settings. I hope to see many more.
