Just started playing NWN 2 with a friend, made a sun elf wizard he made a rogue. First off, the whole dungeon and dragon ruleset thing is really confusing for me, I'm used to D2/WoW where dmg is stated numerically and stats are easy to compare. I'm also used to being able to cast spells whenever, having mana, etc.

My main problem at this point is that I have 3 dmg dealing spells, and I have to leave combat for a while and be safe in order to rest and recharge them, meaning I throw 3 spells and then I'm useless for the rest of the fight, it is kinda dull. The slow pace and story I can live with and adapt to but the combat seems kinda meh.

A lot of people are crazy about this game and I just am not sure I see why yet. Does it get better? Does combat become fun? Keep in mind I can't pause the game cus its multiplayer.

If you're looking for something that's like wow/d2 then this is not really close to what you're looking for. The D&D rule set is pretty complex with multi-classing and penalties and slower combat. Different types of spell casting classes use magic differently. I'm not an expert on the subject so I can't tell you which class does exactly what but there are classes that have limits on casts per day and classes that don't. Later on you do get a good amount of spells and some that are quite damaging. Overall the game is good but don't expect D2/Wow type gameplay.

well, a lot of people are crazy about the sims, doesn't mean that i have to like it. Same thing with d&d games, if you personally don't like super complicated games like nwn2, the witcher, baldur's gate 2, etc then you don't like them and that's that, doesn't matter how many people tell you that they're good games if you're not into that kind of stuff. You could/should just accept that you prefer simpler games and move on to those games

The reason a lot of people like NWN isn't because of the combat. It is based on D&D which you played with friends at a table, with dice , paper, and someone playing the role of dungeon master. These kind of games are mainly targeted at people that really like to get into the role of their character. They like to imagine themselves as that character and what it would be like to be that character. NWN allows people to do that in a video game.

RPG used to be about getting into the character you are playing. It has been used to describe games like Diablo, which to me are not really role playing in the strict sense, but more hack and slash.

NWN is a very dated game so the rave reviews you hear are mostly nostalgia or people who just aren't aware that better games exist.

NWN from 2002 - 7.9
NWN 2 from 2006 - 5.2

Are the scores different because NWN 2 is a bad game? No. They are actually the same game; NWN 2 just has updated graphics and a different story. The reason NWN from 2002 has a better score is because the standards for games were much lower at the time. When they try releasing the same game in 2006, it gets a lot of negative reviews because it's supposed to be in the same league as other 2006 games, but it just isn't.

personally, i thought NWN1 (single player) was crap. no party, very little audio, slow and boring leveling, and mostly uninteresting quests. The multiplayer mods were what made the game.

NWN2 (single player) was much more in line with Baldur's Gate, and therefore, much more interesting. I've been the campaign at least 3 times.

I really did give it a chance, but I uninstalled it today. Game was so slow paced and clunky, and it even crashed once. :/

I played NWN2 and I enjoyed it. Enjoying the Witcher even more now. Didn't play multiplayer with NWN2, but I did finished the campaign coop with my cousin on NWN and it was a blast and it brings back some fond memory. I remember my character got diseased from some monsters (life bar turns greenish), and I tried to sleep it off without healing and my character died during sleep. I think the coop on NWN worked really well.

This is why a low-level wizard carries a crossbow or shortbow / longbow (Elf).

Later on, a wizard can cast a dozen or more spells, and has wands, scrolls and x-use-a-day artifacts.

But no, it's not like Diablo. Try Dungeon Siege I-II or Titan Quest instead.

Played through all those already to boredom, hence I tried NWN2. I was using a bow btw, figured that one out pretty quick.

Optimal build for a wiz is NOT nuking. Make him a buffer. If you want to nuke, play a warlock.

Honestly I wouldn't play NWN2 again if I was being paid by the hour. It was one of the biggest disappointments for me in gaming thus far, up there with TA:Kingdoms, Black and White, and Spore. Not that I had much hope for Spore.

NWN 1... Wasn't that where you could edit the multiplayer save games?
Can't remember whether it was NWN or a similar game around the same time, remember playing a game a while where you could give your character basically anything by editing the multiplayer file, including monster-only spells.

Where is there a tutorial to find out how to play the normal campaign with a friend please?

That's pretty harsh. Personally I found NWN2+MOTB to be the best RPG since BG2+TOB / PS:T and a good deal better than Dragon Age. Especially patched up and on newer hardware that can handle it well.
