nvlddmkm.sys errors on vista home

So my mom has been having problems with her pc recently. She has been getting the error listed above, which is a common thing with nvidia cards (I had it when i ran vista). She has a 7300 in her pc, so what I did was I made sure everything was seated correctly. Turns out a ram stick was loose, so I thought that fixed it. Then I noticed the BSOD, which had the error in the title. So I uninstalled all nvidia drivers and ran driver sweeper. It worked for a little but it came back, and I noticed the fan on the heatsink was not working. I pulled the card and she is using the onboard now without a hitch, but i want to throw her card back in. My question is: Is the card dead or can I get a replacement fan and have it be saved? Would heat issues be causing the BSODS? I noticed it got up to 77c just sitting idle which is when I pulled the card.

I'd clean and re-seat the heatsink and then toss an 80mm fan on it and call it done.

Don't know if it'll actually fix your error... are you getting just a BSOD citing nvlddmkm.sys, or a message in Windows stating "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered" followed by a BSOD?

it was a stop 0x.....116 citing the nvlddmkm.sys. I have had this before on my computer, it was a problem with nvidia drivers and vista 32bit. Wasn't sure if the heat could be causing it. The 2 yr warranty on the card ran out 3 days ago too.

I popped off the heatsink and took off all the shit that was on it and replaced it with as5 but havent gotten around to testing it oyet.

Figures. Things always break the second the warranty expires.

And in any case, it's entirely possible heat is to blame. 77c is a bit high for an idle temp, that means under load it's probably spiking to over a hundred.

yeah, i know it was a bit high. I just thought it auto shutdown when it got too hot, rather than throwing errors. I am looking at getting an aftermarket vga cooler, one of the cheap 12 dollar ones off newegg. Should I have any compatibility problems with those?

Just buy a new fanless card. 4350, 4550, 4670 whatever works your budget. Some of those you can get for $20 and at least you have a guarantee it will work.

The FSFT has some nice deals, but people mostly buy and sell the enthusiastic cards. Overall I'd say a fanless design like the ati 4350 / GT 240 is cheap and the best, will work straight into a new upgrade should it ever happen. Plus she saves some on the energy bill too even as minuscule as it gets.

wow cards have gotten that cheap now? I will just recommend that too her instead...thanks

Yup, these are tough times man. I can build a 4gb decent mid line C2D system with $100 these days. RAM, mb, cpu, videocard (or onboard). Some parts used, some new but it'll last as long as you'd need it to.

Try the 4350 I guess, I believe they're around that price on flebay. No one (rarely anyone) sells it here.
