Hi everyone

I just bought some 3com networking cards recently for a bargain of £8 but i also have a network chip on my MSI K7N420 PRO and i am not sure which one to use.

So i was wondering if i could ask you guys for your opinions. thanks.

AMD Athlon XP 1700
MSI K7N420 PRO
Crucial 512MB RAM
Geforce 2MX Integrated
SoundBlaster Audigy Player
Creative Inspire 5.1 5300
ASUS 16X DVD

I heard bad things about the NForce sh!t, and I know 3Com works so I'd use it. I also use Linux so the fact that I doubt the NForce sh!t has Linux drivers yet would sway my decision too =)

I am a huge 3Com guy, but I would hate to see an intergrated NIC go to waste. I would do some testing to see what types of speeds they are xfering at if you have the time and nothing else to do, but they should both xfer at least 10mbits

It should not matter for normal use. If you are going to be doing alot of xfering between two LAN machines go for the speed. Just internet it will not matter which you use. Even if you have a T-1 you will still not touch the speed of either card.

Hope this helps alittle.

I am a big fan of 3com cards..have never failed me to date..except that time in 'nam..but rosy cheeks ain't laughing now..hehe..anyways..

As for most integrated cards, they seem to accually outpreform many good nics because they have more direct access somehow...

Most integrated devices are notorious for being pci versions on the board that give no improvement, such as a highpoint RAID controller....

NICs are another deal however....I don't know about the NFORce enough to give you a good answer..sorry..

You wont go wrong with the 2coms however...

Why don't you test them out on your LAN and tell us all for reference purposes.

THanks

Ok, I was also looking for info or users of the nforce ethernet controller. I can say this much through direct observation though. First off both ASUS and the new ABIT boards are using a added in Realtek controller. Also I read one review on the net where one of the more recent set of drivers from MSI caused the ethernet not to work at all. I am hoping anandtech will set the damn record straight soon on the nforce. They seem to be waiting for some more mature drivers before passing judgement on the nForce. I believe this to mean a) mobo makers couldnt figure out how to design a perfectly functional board based on the orignal chipset, b) nvidia needs to get some new damn drivers out and fix that sh*t, or maybe c) nvidia f**ked up in a couple spots and are keeping quiet about it. (i.e. the problem with using all 3 DIMM slots causes a loss in performance, gamepc.com did an article on that and its in the user manuals). I really hope nvidia figures it out cause ive been holding off buying a kt266a base board but im not convinced nforce is worth waiting for....
