nVidia's Latest Vista Driver

GamingDaemon

Senior member
I just installed Vista 32-bit (RTM) and was able to get a couple of games (COH and Neverwinter Nights 2) running using the default nVidia driver from Microsoft.

I noticed that nVidia just released a new Vista driver on Saturday. When I try to install it, it gives me an error about Age of Empires patch 2.0a. I haven't even installed that game, much less the patch.

Anyone have any success with this driver yet?

TIA

Don't think the driver is why the game doesn't work.. Haven't had an issue w\NWN2.. Or the new driver from NVIDIA.

I may not have been clear. The games work fine using the driver provided by WIndows Vista.

However, i just noticed a new nVidia driver for Vista and thought, let me try to install it. No dice. It won't install. Sometimes it doesn't give me a reason. Sometimes, it mentions the 'Age of Empires' error, which I don't have installed on my machine.

So, I am wondering if anyone else has tried to isntall the latest nVidia driver?

Have you tried installing manually through Device manager instead?

No, I haven't, but I don't think that will work. The setup files are all in the .cab files. I did finally see the problem report though. I am pasting it in here. It seems to indicate that there is a file that could not be copied because it is not compatible with the version of Windows. But this download was made specifically for Vista. I am very confused.

I have the NEwsest driver installed, the one you listed. And I can play NWN 2 no problem..

"Status Solution Available " Can't you click on that and it directs you to a site explaining what to do? I had a system.dll that crashed a couple times and it directed me to the answer..

No, the 'Solution Available' is just text. I can't click on it. I click on 'Check for new solutions' but it says check back later or something like that. Any other ideas?

When I force Vista to check for a solution to this problem, I get the message about Age of Empires II, a game I don't even own much less have installed on my machine. It sends me to this link

How do i fix this?

Well, it looks like this is actually a common problem. The solution? Use the UK version of the driver. There seems to be a consistent problem with the US version.

My shotgun approach that worked. One or more of these are the trick....

1. download the international version from nVidia's site.
2. look in windows\inf. Find the OEMxx.inf files that refer to your nVidia display driver and rename them (along with the corresponding .pnf file). I had two that needed renamed.
3. clear the files in your user profile temp folder (start run %temp% to jump there). Specifically the guid named folders.
4. pause your realtime antivirus.

Thanks Smilin!

I actually installed the 97.52 beta drivers found here.

I still am not able to turn on antialiasing or bloom or HDR effects. If I do, then the game runs with a black screen which eventually turns into a screen of diagonal colors and lines!

Further, if I leave the OS alone for a while, and then wake it up, I get the same problem. I turned off sleep, hibernate and even virtual hibernate, and it still behaves this way.

I'm uninstalling the drivers for now.
