NVIDIAor ATI?---Geforce or Radeon

Depends what market you are looking at.

At the moment, it sort of looks like this:
Midrange Mobile: ATI
Midrange Desktop: Nvidia
Highend Desktop: ATI
Highend Mobile: Nvidia

There really is no better, it depends on what you're looking at.

Sure the NVIDIA GeForce Go7900GTX is better than the ATI MR X1600, but you can't get the Go7900GTX in a <17" laptop like you can the MR X1600. Hell you can ge the MR X1600 in a 14" notebook.

I love that fact, the 14" with the X1600. I'll be getting one soon 🙂.

Unfortunately, it is hard to find smaller notebooks that are more capable grapically. I feel that there is a market for smaller (<17") that can handle today's games with decent settings. that is not being filled.

I was under the idea that NVIDIA kick A$$ in HIGHEND desktops?

Thats what I saw in the MAXIMUM pc mag. 😕

A lot depends on what you want to do. If your high end machine is used for work - video and photo processing, and stuff like that - I would go Radeon. They are very stable and reliable. But - if you are a gamer, you might want Nvidia.

From the last benchmarks I've seen, the X1900XTX is beating out most of Nvidia's offering, and when it is in crossfire mode, it tends to be taking the number 1 slot in the benchmark scores.

Yes, I would agree. The ultra-high end is taken by ATI with the 1900XTX cards, but these run hotter, louder, and consume more power than the top-end Nvidia cards, and are more expensive as well [at least in the UK].

The best bang-for-buck cards are the 7900GT [which are becomming very cheap in the UK, under £200] and the ATI X1800XT for same price. These cards will both give you near maximum detail/AA/AF and still slaughter the game.

Unfortunately your advice doesn't coincide with reality. ATi's top end desktop cards are faster and cheaper than nVidia's best right now.

The answer to your question changes nearly every week since that's about the length of a model line now.
