Why is all this new technology coming out so fast? I thought DDR2 was barely in the mix and every new GFX card was going to utilize that. Oh well, I guess its better for technology to move faster rather than waiting a couple of years for the next big thing.

but why put it on the 5700u? the 9800xt/se is pretty much canibalizing that part of nv's segement, why would they want to close the performance gap between the 5700u and 5900xt when it's confusing enough that they are already priced similarly. do they need to further muddle an already confusing segment of their lineup? yikes...

Nvidia's limitation for a long time has been the memory speed. This should make a very competitive mid-range offering.

Doesn't make sense to most gamers but they seem to forget that cutting-edge gamers represent maybe 5% of retail sales while 95% of people want something good that isn't gonna have them eating raman noodles for a month. LOL

but the 5900xt and the 5700 ultra are similarly priced (the $200 mainstream pricepoint).. we arent taking a $450 nv38 here....

and besides, i belive cards such as the fx 5200 (those priced around 100-150) actually sell the most - and by a good margin :p

Its actually GDDR3, not DDR3, its DDR specifically designed for graphics cards because DDR2 has heat problems that were resolved in GDDR3s design.

It could be used for lower power consumption on a high performance mobile part.

hehe.. true, but the 5700u is neither mobile nor hi perfomance, is it? ;)

I wouldn't say that. Only a year ago it was the top of the line for Nvidia. It is a good design even though they had problems pushing it out the door at first.

If you could add really good RAM to it, the 5700U would far surpass the current mid-range FX5200. Might even get up near the 9800Pro in real life. Like I said, a nice mid-range card after all the dust settles. :)

With the amount of functional Z units on the 5700U, if they pair it with fast enough GDDR3 it could handily best the 9600XT w/AA in terms of performance(making 4x useable at decent res with a mid tier part). Factor that in with the high end NV3X parts being axed within the next couple of months(along with the high end R3x0 parts more then likely) and a 5700U with a good amount of bandwidth could make a lot of sense.

Plus they'll be able to save money by not using RAMsinks. IMO, they're using the 5700U as a bit of a primer for NV40's ramp-up.

Why would you care about new RAM coming out? It's not like there's going to be some magic new functionality in the cards because of new ram, other than it being faster

nice memory
but if this is anything more than nvidia "testing" it out then i think it is a waste
they're product line is all crazy and confusing right now
hopefully their new cards will use this memory

hopefully next time they will only releasse 3 cards and come up with a simple naming scheme

Its not that I am mad about it or anything Im just thinking about all the people that bought 5700 Ultra's and now newer, better versions of it are coming out. Its like the feeling you get when right after you buy something the price suddenly drops.
