sooo, there's no performance increase for those with single core CPUs? I mean...well...this hyper threading that my P4 has...isn't that supposed to "mimic" dual core (in a slight way...)...sooooo....would that do anything?

i dunno.

Well of course not in that sense. If I'm not mistaken what these drivers do is assigning the second core of the cpu with vertex processing, thus strengthening the gpu overall power.
How does this can be done with a single core cpu using H/T? H/T is a trick for better multitasking not a real second core 😉

Ah, ok. Darn it. I was just hoping for a performance boost. It does make sense now though.
thankee!

NP m8. I wish official ones though bring a general perf increase,so that all of us can benefit from it. 😉

OK done some preliminary testing on the 88.84's before hitting the sack. In my case... I'm using XG78.05's as the baseline (last stable release, performance comparable to 77.77's) on an X2 3800 2.5ghz.

These are VERY similar in performance to the 81.26's, with one huge exception: It's a lot more stable =)

3dmark05 gains 400points over 78.05's (8.6k-9k)
aquamark gains 14k over 78.05's (84k-98k)
fear gains roughly 33% on min fps and 10% on avg fps over 78.05's (no increase over 88.82's)
all my games (which is to say, not that many) ran without bsod (woot) or fatal errors (woot)
I hear CS:S users are bsodding over these though, I can't verify since I don't play CSS.

I like these. Will keep until something bsods on me. CPU usage is roughly 65-70% on system (over both cores), so they've still got a long way to go before hitting that 100% mark. Nonetheless, until more multithreaded apps appear, it's free 3D performance.

If you can't find the control panel, it's under \WINDOWS\system32\nvcplui.exe

We seem to have comparable gains from the drivers. I also tried Doom3(10-12% in 1600x1200!!),FC and SC:CT with less perf gains and great ones too for CS:S and HL2.
Need to test more... Also I played CS:s with 81.84 just an hour ago and I didn't have issues as with 81.29. I think that was fixed with 81.84.

the 81.84 on a 64 bit system was horrible, and that is with a x2. i'm back with 78.03 for now. oh well.

Yeah it looks like all the sites are using the old drivers which in a way is good for uniformity in the testing of ATI newer cards. Doesn't look so good for ATI-the only card that impressed me was the X1800XT and that actually was REALLY impressive for 16 pipes. BUT from early results with the new nvidia drivers I think the 7800GTX is going to regain/keep the perf. crown. Add to that that nvidia could bring(and talking about already) a 512MB higher clocked? card out-

I am now waiting for the R580!!! If they can bring 24-32+ pipes on that process now THAT would blow the 7800's out of the water!!

So when's the final driver coming out? There's no way Anand is gonna bench w/ these.

Why not? AT has done benched with beta drivers before.

And they have done it again. Here is their justification: "We used the latest drivers we had available which are both beta drivers. From NVIDIA, the 81.82 drivers were tested rather than the current release as we expect the rel 80 drivers to be in the end users hands before the X1000 series is easy to purchase."

Good reasoning IMO.

Wow! ATI releases a brand new card and you are the first person I see saying that you are waiting for their next release from ATI.

Driverheaven and Firingsquad both had reviews using the new drivers and overall the 1800 XT *vaporware* cough cough was still faster.
But here's the bottom line, its not worth the wait or the added expense. Just my opinion.

Yeah I just read the Firing Squad review and the 1800XT does seem impressive. For my situation I either get a 7800GT now and wait for the unified arch. cards to come out or I wait for the R580 and pay through the nose for a TOTALLY killer card that will last me 2+ years. The R520 line just doesn't leapfrog far enough out for me to justify the $ spent especially by the time I can actually buy the 1800XT the R580 may only be 1-2 months away!!😉

Edit- see Zenoth's post in video section for another person looking towards the R580 already!
