This pretty much makes loss of the MS/Xbox contract irrelevant, PS2 sales in 2003 were 4X+ XBox sales.
http://www.video-games-survey.com/consoles.htm

In 2004, Xbox is still way behind:
http://news.com.com/Game+conso...&subj=news.1043.20
Sony will continue to dominate the market, while Nintendo and Microsoft scrap for second place globally.

This is not the first time I wish I had bought some nVidia stock. :(

Anyway, definitely newsworthy.

Sorry to DP this topic on you Rollo, saw the news and checked real quick to see if it had been posted and didn't see it anywhere..... I have to say I am utterly shocked by this one.

NP, Ben, you were probably posting as I was finding sales stats.

I was shocked as well, even more so about the part where nVidia has been working with Sony two years. Makes MS dropping them, and their lawsuit against MS seem much less mysterious doesn't it?

Oh well. It looks like everyone wins in this one: MS keeps making money like they have a money tree, ATI gets a big new console contract, nVidia gets a bigger console contract, ATI/nVidia's strengthened financial position assures us of competition and choice.

Can't find any downside here.

jeeeess........the ATI vs Nvidia war has now properly reached console market (gamecubes gou doesnt count....ati never designed it they jus bought the campany that did artx?)

will this get people on these forums to buy more consoles or perhaps people who would never touch a console to buy one?

all those who have GPU's collections, wud they buy the ps3 or xbox 2 just to complete the collection?

I have to say I'm surprised they were able to keep it under wraps for so long.

This is huge news as far as business goes.

No wonder nVidia didn't seem to care that they weren't picked by Microsoft or Nintendo for their next consoles. This will make things very interesting in the graphics wars.

I can't wait to see what these next consoles will actually be capable of.

I'm willing to bet you would have just as good a gaming experience on ATI based XBox's. I wouldn't bet my soul mind you, but there's a really good chance the XBox will be phenomenal as well as the PS3.

So that's where NV50 is going to. j/k. Would not be surprised though.

that's the problem; i'm not willing to barter my soul to play on a M$ console. ;)

but yes, the tech for both should be good.

however i'm willing to guess that Sony's Cell tech will be at least as good as IBM's 3 core PowerPC chip for Xbox2, the worry was that Sony's GPU would be Inferior to the ATI GPU planned for Xbox2. that is no longer a worry. :)

This is big for Nvidia. Very big.

Playstation consoles outsell the other two by leaps and bounds worldwide, not just in the US. Compared to this, the money Nvidia made off of XGPU is going to be peanuts.

The CPU alone makes me think the PS3 will be out ages before the XBox2. The Cell is just a newer processor, shouldn't take forever long to get it out of fabs, whereas people keep talking about this TRIPLE core Xbox2 CPU, and we haven't even seen early dual core samples hit the streets yet. If nothing changes, I bet Sony and nV could get the PS3 out by 06, whereas I wouldn't expect the XBox2 with it's current specs out anytime before 07.

I didn't see this one coming. I think Sony is the lucky partner here. Without NVidia they would be lacking on the graphics front.

This has got me excited :)

agreed. it takes a lot to keep up with cutting edge technology such as GPU's, a specialisation that Sony just doesn't have or need, they are a system integrator specialist, let them integrate someones tech.

Between this and NV40, Nividia to me seems to be in a very similar position as they were with GeForce 3/Xbox GPU. Wonder what all those fanboys who were proclaiming Nvidia deader than disco in mid 2003 have to say now? ;)

Nice ... Finally something to bring the price of their stock back up.
I'm in big with it, and got screwed when their stupid employees got investigated for insider trading.

Not too shabby.

But I gotta ask. What the heck is the Bandai WonderSwan?

Edit - Whomever named it needs to be shot.

Huh? The Xbox2 will be using the IBM Power5 which was released earlier this year; the dual-core Power4 was originally released in 2001.

Right now it seems analysts believe the Xbox2 will be released Q4 '05 and will be unveiled at CES next month.

Uh, yeah. The new POWER5 chips are basically a proven PowerPC design being tweaked and switched over to dual-core. They should be quite similar to the processors being used in the new dual-CPU PowerMacs. "Cell" is an entirely new multiprocessing CPU architecture being developed from the ground up. Keep in mind that the CPU specs are also just rumors thus far -- and it was for three dual-core CPUs, not a "TRIPLE core" CPU.

At the rate things seem to be going for Sony and MS, you'll almost certainly see the XBox2 before the PS3. If Sony *just* decided that NVIDIA is doing their graphics chip, it's going to take some time just to get that off the ground -- and Cell is nowhere near finished. Late '05 for XBox2 sounds pretty reasonable to me if it's using IBM DC CPUs and an r500 variant, but 2006 wouldn't surprise me either if there are any major development/production issues or setbacks.

(waits for apoppin to jump in and proclaim the Inq has decided XBox2 will be out in two months and anyone who says otherwise is obviously wrong  )

Wow, this is big news indeed. Nvidia working in cahouts with Microsoft's rival in the console market - looks like M$ is going to have to throw some hurdles at Nvidia so they don't get full DX10 compliance ;) (j/k) . Seriously though, knowing big companies like Microsoft's tendencies to go hard on their rivals, the implications of this alliance in both the PC and console market are going to be huge. Stay tuned!

Everyone is switching sides - Nvidia is now with Sony, Dell has let AMD in the door... What is this world coming to?

One thing is for sure - the next generation of consoles between Microsoft and Sony is going to be cutthroat. This time Microsoft will be early to the dance, which will give them an early leg up. I wouldn't bet against Sony though, and I can see the PS3 being at least the juggernaut the PS2 was and is.

Hmm...Jiffy got me thinking. Ok, so the Xbox2 is more or less running DirectX, right ?

Ok, nvidia writes their drivers primarily for openGL and DirectX. Could it be the playstation 3 will run in openGL or a slight derivative of openGL ?

Because i was thinking of all the man-hours required to write radicly new drivers for a hardware part that is capable of running openGL and DirectX but runs some Sony Graphic API. A sony Graphic API to me seems silly as Nvidia is designing the graphic hardware, not sony. So why not stick to something Nvidia has great success with (openGL). Its obviosly not going to be running DirectX, so why wouldn't it run in openGL ?

Before, I used to think allegiences to GPU makers was pretty lame. Now that I find out that ATI is in bed with M$ and that Nvidia is going to make the PS3 GPU, I'm 100% an Nvidia fanboy.

Dell has always let AMD in the door, they just always show them the way out rather quickly. :p
