Go to Nvidia's home page and under features, you'll see a banner which states The Power of 3 releasing in XX Day, XX Hours, XX minutes. It seems Nvidia is actually releasing the 7800GT (and maybe other cards) on August 11, just like what the inquirer had stated. The banner also states "So don't buy old graphics for your computer"...

Any thoughts?

I'm betting it's the rest of the 7800 line.

What would really be trippy is if they managed some kind of three-way SLI deal.

It is also coincidence with the conference call on that particular day.

It is safe to say their stock should hike on that day since record positive earning and new product announment falling on the same day.

The only way they would be able to do that if the third card was using the PCIE X1 slot, since no mobo today has three 16X slots, nor is there any planned for the near future.

What would make more sense is that the 7800GT is released with on shelf availability, along with the announcement of 7800Ultra to arrive with the R520.

Well it is not the fact that there isn't 3 slots. Somone could make that if they so desire. However, the Northbridge simply does not support enough PCI-E lanes. IIRC it supports 25. So you have your x16, and your x8, and your x1.

Time for a new chipset :)

I would laugh if they released an SLI Ménage-à-trois. Would be the stupidest thing evar.

However, i am quite interested in the 7800GT/7600GT/7800 Ultra or whatever it is they have cooking.

the evga boards have 3 pci-e 16x slots :p

anyway, theres no way they could've kept something like that under wraps.

Maybe they are releasing drives that fix the video overlay problems from the last release.

Nah, that's too important to bother with.

If there's one thing i've learned about nVidia, it's that driver issues are their last concern.

Based on all other cards it should be. Traditionally the Ultra is the best. However, we have never had a GTX before so not quite sure... but we all think there is going to be an Ultra which is better.

:D

One can only hope!

My theory on the matter is this:

In previous generations we have seen nvidia use the Ultra, GT, and basemodel (6800 Ultra, 6800 GT, 6800) to describe the perfomance level of each GPU.

I believe that in an effort to have marketing pizzaz all the way around, nvidia will go with this set of rankings:

GT for base model
GTX for Midgrade
Ultra for top of the line

Seeing as how the performance parameters for all their cards have gone through the roof, I think that renaming the base model GT will give new card buyers who are'nt computer literate reason to get thier card instead of ATI's based on an implied logic of "forced implyment". ;)

Hardware n00b: "Hey look, I can get a GT card for the same price as what ATI wants for their non Pro/XT card". Marketing ploy I think.

I could be wrong, but that seems to make sense to me.

In either event, all I know is that the 3rd generation of the modern GPU wars is about to start. Nvidia fired the first shot, now they are reloading. ATi, its your turn.

And do hurry up ATi, I want my 7800 Ultra to be cheap come christmas time! ;)

If the mobo manufacturers have 25 lanes of PCI-E and there's a demand for 3x SLI, then why don't they just do x8-x8-x8-x1? That would be a hell of a lot better than x16-x8-x1.

your probably right...it would seem that those rankings are much more marketing efficient.

What I think, is that NV will use a new 4 -tier ranking system from now on, with Vanilla, GT, GTX, and Ultra. Except, different from past practices, that they would release the pseudo-top end GTX first to test the market, but hold off the max clock rate about 20-25%. And when competition raises the bar; then they would unleash the Ultra version, in an attempt to one-up the competition.

By the way, ATI seriously need to get their act together. In all likelihood, we will se a 7800U by or before October of this year. If they waste anymore time , they risk releasing the R520 at the same time as G71 (7900GTX ??), and would be a whole half-cycle refresh behind the NV lineup.

And also what has happened to X-fire, is it getting off the ground at all?

The thing is with the 7800gtx, its suppose to be the high end card msrping at $550. So where igzactly is the ultra going to be $600-$700 msrp? Of course those prices are always lower after the hype dies down but still.

I thinks its going down like this:
7800GTX
7800GT
7800vanilla/7600GT (either one considering both are in the current 6x00 series)

later along wiht the R580 launch:
7800Ultra/7900GTX
7900GT
7900vanilla

Also, the Inquierer might actually be right for once ;)

nVidia has dropped "Ultra" in the past. They had the TNT2 Ultra and didn't use it again until the GeForce 2 Ultra. Then they skipped it for GF3 and GF4, bringing it back for GF5 and GF6.

It most likely means the 7800GT and possibly lower end cards because the add is talking about "old graphics", obviously bashing ATI for not yet supporting SM3, they're now trying to cover their bases with a wider variety of products at various price points whereas ATI still has nothing to offer in competition to the 7 series.
