Nvidia stops making gtx 470 in favor of the dual core gtx490@ 375 watts?

Followed up from the "dropping cuda for the gtx 465 thread".
It seems Nvidia is positioning the gtx 465 to go against the 5850 and use the gtx 470 chip for a dual core gtx 490 @ 375 watts.

This does not make sense to me. Why not use the cuda disabled, cooler running, less power usage gtx 465 in a dual core chip it it competes with the 5850?

It seems one way or another Nvidia has some trick up it's sleeve. :hmm:
Can't wait for the 2nd of June. :)

No disrespect but you seem like a nvidia guy so why don't you own one? I promise you I could care less about red v green bs. I buy what I like. Waiting on the refresh?

? You would not call this news? WHats it have to do with red vs green?
It has to do with a 375 watt dual core gpu migh be in the works to take the crown.

The gtx 470 might be done? Thats not news?

I didn't say it was bad or good, but it is news.

Na, I'm waiting on the gtx 465 and or a nice price drop on a 5830 or 5850 for a crossfire setup.

I've played the 26 games currently on my drive with my gtx260 & 5750 just fine.

That doesn't make any sense. The Fudzilla rumors from a while ago were for a dual 460 (the g104).

The 470 was supposed to be the volume part, why would the pittance of dual 490(5)s make a dent in it. If it is to be canceled that is not logical reason.

If it is going away It makes more sense to me that it is just not worth binning for it and the 465.

Besides all that... I had a bloody good laugh at the triple slot 5890s... this thing is going to be ridiculous at 375W... It is already not practical.. just slap two 480s together in a four slot beast and let the 5 people in the world that want something like that have their candy :D. We will see.

According to this, they will be using two GF104 cores instead.

P.S. Does anyone know if such a dual GPU card can be used in Tesla applications? I am trying to figure out if Nvidia's large die strategy is a result of the gaming market or the HPC market.

Thats what I was saying ,it seems much more feasable to use the gtx465 if its truly gonna be a true gaming card with no cuda and other bloated features that make it power hungry and hot.

http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2076109

Yeah, but does the possibility exist a cooler running dual GF104 card would be better for HPC than the current GF100 Tesla?

I do know that the gaming market likes large single GPU cards, but does the HPC market follow the same line of thinking?

If the HPC market is better off with more power efficient GF104 cards, leaving harvested 465 GTX for the gaming market would make more sense right? Remember how bad HD5830 was in the power department? Those harvested Radeons actually eat more power than a HD5850, yet deliver worse performance.

no thats the gtx460 not 465 in his link which is different. the gtx460 is based off the smaller more efficient g104.

A dual gtx 460 card is not gonna compete with a 5970.
It would be about gtx 480 speeds.

A dual gtx 465 with no cuda, and without the other bloated heat related features would be ideal for a dual card option and probrobly compete with a 5970.

Am I confused about something?

We have to remember how interested Nvidia is in HPC.

I doubt it. Unless they plan to move the 480 into that price range.

Without a 470 they will have a rather large gap between 465 and 480.

nv will probably raise the price of the 465 and AMD follow suite so that we are royally screwed.

NV kills off the best card they have, in terms of value. That's just too damned funny. :awe:

if you read the article you find out:
1. they heard that nvidia is canceling the GTX470 in favor of the GTX465 (sensible move)
2. they heard that nvidia will make a dual GPU card called the GTX490, the author of the article then guessed that it would be 2xGTX470 on one card. I disagree with this guess.

My guess is that the GTX490 dual card would be 2xGTX265... and that the GTX470 would disappear completely. The GTX470 is a die harvested part (technically, so is the GTX480). if yields have improved enough due to some innovate production solutions then they might not need the extreme level of die harvesting that results in the GTX470, leaving more GTX480 quality chips. Perhaps they would even debut a GTX485 chip with a full fermi die with nothing disabled. (recall, the GTX480 has portions of the die disabled).

How many threads titled " Nvidia is just about ready to release the greatest thing" can one guy start?

Charlie always said current fermi was a very limited run - as it doesn't make money. Put butter and jam on it if you like.

This is similar to what they did with the 8800gts 320 which is Why I have hesitated to buy a 470.

how is this similar? the 8800gts 320mb was just a cheaper alternative to the 8800gts 640mb for those that thought 320mb would be enough for their res. both cards stayed around when the 8800gts 320mb launched.

from a cruncher's point of view... a cuda disabled card is worth less than a free paper weight.

Well, he did also recently start a non-nVidia thread, the one about DX11 coming to the Lucid Hydra.

I'm surprised at you for saying this. :(

Truth be told there is just not much going on in the AMD camp right now.
I look over the rumer and news sites to bring new topics to the forums is all.

I did start a 12 display 5790 thread but it was a repost of old news?
No one seems to know crap about S.I or N.I. And there is a thread for that allready.:\

dude there is a reason my post ended with a "lol" and a :p

lighten up man, be...happy(ier?)

If you didn't post these threads then I'd be wasting more time needlessly looking for the info, trust me I do appreciate being able to skim thru the Video forum, open just the threads that sound intriguing, and then closing my browser knowing I'm probably not missing much else by doing so.

Don't take our ribbing so seriously ;) If any of us had an actual issue with you we'd be hitting you in PFI.
