Oh, don't be so sensationalist. He said "IF we could," not "we can."

We've already had several discussions about why a dual-GPU GTX280 is extremely unlikely.

The best approach is to do both. If we could offer a single chip solution at 399, it certainly doesn?t preclude us from building a two-chip solution at something higher. So I think that having the right price, right product at each price point and the best-performing product at each price point is the most important thing.

First of all, it is *impossible* to build GT280x2[period]

unless Nvidia uses advanced alien technology :p

the thermal characteristics of their GPU does not allow it

However, with the shrink to 55nm, a GT260x2 is certainly possible
[or 270, whatever it is called]

we see GT260 SLi doing very well against the 4870x2

They may be able to rework the chip some going into the die shrink to make 280 possible. Although even if they used 260's they would probably still call it GTX280 GX2.

When the 8800GTX came out people did not think a GX2 would show up and then the 9800 GX2 popped out.

i was the only guy at B3D - for months - that believed [believes] that a GX2 Tesla will show up; no worries, they are coming around to my PoV. :D

However, a 280x2 is impossible at even 55 nm. 260 is barely possible and i think they will just call it GTx2 :p

Nvidia will do whatever it takes to regain the performance crown. But then AMD will be looking at HD4550x3 and their own further shrink

Did you see what the x2 idles at? They will have to do some work of thier own on temps before a third GPU is possible.

Im thinking NV is going to pull something (or at least try to) out of its hat early Q2. We shall see.

I am quite sure that Nvidia will do a GX2 but will it be as good overall as compared to 4870x2 is another thing...

GTX 280 on 65nm x2 is very very hot, 55nm x2 is more likely just to lower temp...!! "280 core does not like heat at all"

A GTX280 x2 can have 256bitx2 interface and DDR5 and two GTX 260 cores.... "Even GTX280 @ 55nm will be quite hot for an x2"

Because of die size and thermals gtx280x2 will never happen. They just can't do it, 55nm or not. gtx260x2 may happen though, but likely it won't be cheap.

Nvidia has kinda shot itself in the foot for a multi-gpu solution anywhere in the near future when it was origonally decided that they would produce one very large chip

90nm-80nm didnt do that much to the ATI chips (x1900-x1950) so a drop of 10nm isnt going to do massive amounts as far as the heat is concerned, i wouldnt rule out something like cutting down the SP's like they did from the g92 (8800gt) to the g94 (9600gt) then making it multi-gpu

It will time for them to also build a board that has integrated sli and shared memory nvidia hasnt done multi-gpu boards for nearly a decade so there at square one as far as im concerned with reaserch and design

or 256mbit bus

or IMHO nothing until next gen single/multi gpu solution from Nvidia around Q2 next year

double the chips on the card, double the card failures? i wouldn't bother...

this is just nvidia's way of trying to steal fame from the 4870 X2

Rumor or not, but at every job I've every had when the co-founder, President, and CEO of the company said "the best approach is __________ ", my company usually ended up doing __________.
