I don't think it has been confirmed, but gpu-cafe seems to be pretty sure about it.

http://gpucafe.com/2009/03/inc...-price-drop-on-gtx260/

Is it enough? If the HD4890 ends up roughly as fast as the GTX216c, with 512mb ram, and costs the same, then Nvidia has something pretty competitive, and will spoil ATI's launch, just like ATI did with the GTS250.

This isn't enough of a pricecut to compete with the $149 HD4870, or is it? What's the word on the HD4870's 1GB anyways, did they also see a $50 pricecut?

Loving these times, chances are my HD4850 is getting passed along, to be replaced by a HD4870 in CF. (mobo only does CF)

I love price wars. :) Looks like it'll be a great time to buy very shortly. They may even entice me to grab a second 4870 if this continues.

Considering the 4890 is supposed to only "compete" with the 260 I don't think NVIDIA really has anything to worry about.

Besides there are no $149 4870s and the 1GB is up around $200

I would like to see this price drop

the older gtx is already down to $150! http://shop4.frys.com/product/5636781

that's not nvidias response, that's just frys clearing the stock. And once they sell all of them they won't restock because they're not made anymore

I don't agree. 4870 512mb is head to head with GTX 260 216. Here is the latest review:
http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3523&p=4

Assuming most people are using 1900x1200 resolution:
Ati 4870 512mb wins:
Age of Conan
Fallout 3
Left 4 dead
Grid

GTX 260 216 wins:
Call of Duty World at War
Crysis warhead
Farcry 2

I would say GTX 260 is generally slower than ATI 4870 512mb, and 216 will keep up with 4870.

dont bother , he wont understand. 4870 is much better value EVEN if they perform the same because its much cheaper.

QFT. 4870 > GTX 260 Core 216. Price, performance, however you wanna categorize it, it's pretty clear.

last weekend i did a little testing 260gtx 55nm 216sp vs 4870 1gb....gtx is faster, but somehow i get better image quality on ATI in world of warcraft, even though the screenshots are almost identical...its probably just down to contrast or something...one thing that was annoying is that i had to enter manually EDID of my philips lcd for the nvidia dvi-hdmi to work and not to destroy the LCD constan flickering ;)
one observation:

warmonger with gtx doing 3d and physx i got 65 FPS on the scene, and warmonger with gtx doing 3d,a nd 9800gt doing physx on the same scene i got 85FPS...a nice boost

but,

THERE ISNT ANY GAMES OUT THERE FOR PHYSX GRRR...i want like 50 games, 20 of which should be major hits ;)

so i sold gtx and kept the 4870, and i was sooo close to switch over :p

I just read anadtech's review. It's amazing how 4870 512mb manages to stay so close to gtx 260 c216 in 1920X1200 and bellow, even when AA is set to 4x. This card is the winner at price/performance ratio, right now.
