NVidia redefines 1080p

TIME FOR MORE blatant and unfair assassinations, and just to make Intel feel like we are not picking on them exclusively, today's target is Nvidia.

Yes, Nvidia, who left me alone for far to long in one of its booths at Computex, so I actually looked at things for more than a minute, and here is what I found.

You will note the laptop in question proudly displays the text "this [sic] video was displayed in 1080p on a Home Theater Desktop PC featuring Nvidia Graphics." OK, I'll buy the Nvidia Graphics part, but the Home Theater Desktop PC is a bit of a stretch. Does Tosh still make desktops?

The part that got me curious was the 1080p bit. If you look at the resolution of 1080p, you will see that it is 1920 * 1080. Fair enough. The rez on the Tosh is a mere 1440 * 900, and last time I checked, you could not draw a 1920 * 1080 box inside a 1440 * 900 box. To make matters worse, the aspect ratios are off.

The kicker? The movie title is NVidia_1280x720_HD. Again, according to the Wikipedia page, that puts it at 720p. DOH!

according to the Wikipedia page, that puts it at 720p

They had to look it up to find out it was 720P?

"smart" marketing - IMHO

how many ppl know diff between 1080p and 1080i?
how many know diff between HDTV and 1080p and 720p and 480p?

now - can you see diff between 1080p and 720p on 15" lcd?
yes, I can that diff on my 42" lcd, but so sure about 15"

so, I'm about that NV can even say they can draw HD at much higher res,( it just lcd can't show it ...)
then average Joe will think he /she saw / got the best ever made HD res and go with NV as ATI doesn't claim they can do it too just fine ...

NV PR far better then ATI - IMO

heh, some people like my mate thought that by buying an Xbox 360 he automatically got everything in HD. i had to let him down gently when i said you'll also need something other than a 14inch SD TV to play it on lol

honestly you can barely even tell on a 42" lcd too.

Whoever wrote that article isn't terribly knowledgable. Like Todd33 said he had to look up on Wikipedia to know that 1280x720 is 720p? Also, just because the screen has a lower resolution doesn't mean it can't run 1080p content. It will process it and then downscale it to the monitor's resolution, so that doesn't mean it was doing any less processing. And then the kicker, where he says the aspect ratio was off. I take it he doesn't realize that 1080p and 720p would be 16:9, but the resolution of the laptop is 16:10?

From what I can tell from the article, the display doesn't claim the laptop is running a 1080p video. Actually, what appears to have happened is that the original video was run in 1080p on some desktop, and then nVidia converted the 1080p one to 720p and is running it on that laptop.

um, they're obviously stating a reference. The educated obviously don't need it, but there are many who aren't...

That's EXACTLY what he means. It's a 16:9 video inside a 16:10 display, which means the AR's don't match, and the video won't fill the screen edge-to-edge.
