Nvidia rebranding more than just their low end chips for next gen?

Not content with the mess that the 555M which had a variety of specifications (including different CHIPS!) under the same name it looks like Nvidia are adding another layer of complexity.

So as far as I can make out, we will have:

Nvidia
Up to 630M: Rebrands of up the 550m
635M: Rebrand of the 555m with all that entails.
640M to 660M: New gen chip?
670M to 675M: 570m and 580M rebrand
680M: New gen chip.

AMD does the same thing. their mobile 7000 series were just rebadged 6000 series gpus.

Seems like a high number for a rebrand, doesn't leave any room hardly for new sku's on 28nm/kepler within the same family. Unless Kepler will get an entirely new xxx series.

Nothing just yet but it's safe to assume that it will involve the 7770 series and 7870 series desktop GPUs.

AFAIK there aren't any SI chips being made to cover those SKU's with Cape Verde (7700) being the smallest. I wonder if it means the same for nVidia? Does that mean GK104 will be their smallest 600 series chip? I thought they were supposed to have GK106/7 out soon. Or maybe they'll be fast enough to fill the 680 slot? Assuming GK104 for the 690.
Eh? Historically a Cape Verde sized chip from NVIDIA would be something like GF108. GK104 certainly will not be the smallest thing they produce.

Mobile GPU naming is terrible all around. Heck, desktop naming is pretty bad these days as well.

Scandal not found.

I agree. So, why are they rebranding all the way up to the 675? It doesn't make sense unless they are still a ways out and need something sooner. Will they be 700 series, maybe?

I'd have to imagine they're still a ways out and need something sooner; it was 6 months after GF100 before GF108 launched. Meanwhile AMD has the "new" 7000M series and NVIDIA has the "old" 500M series.

Meh, you won't find a 80W TDP GPU in a 14" or lower laptop anyway. Most are better of with a gaming desktop and a semi-powerful laptop that is actually portable than deal with gaming laptops with all the inherent shortcomings like a lousy LCD etc.

Agreed. It has started a while back too. I don't remember the specifics, but I believe something like GT210 was renamed GT320 (or there was barely a bump in speed). At least in the past AMD and NV stayed about 1 generation behind in performance (i.e., what used to be mid-range on the desktop would make its way as high-end for laptops) and I am pretty sure newer parts were shrinks to reduce power consumption. Now with straight up re-brands and 20-45 mhz GPU clock speed bumps on the same 40nm process, the consumers aren't even getting the benefit of lower power consumption.

The unfortunate part is that more and more people are likely gaming on laptops as the popularity of desktops continues to decline relative to laptops. And yet we are seeing consumers getting "ripped" off by GTX670M that's supposedly 1 generation faster than GTX570M. The information regarding HD7000 series from AMD isn't much better.

Mobile GPU guides on Anandtech are needed more than ever. Even us desktop guys can barely keep up with all these mobile rebrands. They make it extremely difficult to recommend GPUs without looking up the exact details.

Yeah pretty stupid. Whether or not this has any bearing on when Kepler is coming remains to be seen. I imagine Nvidia will initially allocate all GK104 chips for desktop video cards, while using GK106/GK107 mobile chips will fulfill Apple orders first.

This also means that Kepler parts might be branded gtx / gts 700 series.

I wonder if filling Apple orders might be why they need such a large range of rebranded models? I can't imagine Apple would be happy about it though.

I can't imagine Apple agreed to fermi-based GPU's. I'm fairly sure that everything Apple gets will be Kepler based, so I doubt Apple would really care what Nvidia rebrands their products to for non-Apple notebooks.

I wouldn't mind this if the chips were at least manufactured on the newest process ... but rebranding the same exact gpu without even that is despicable from bot manufacturers.

Guess this recent article was missed.
Radeon HD 6990M And GeForce GTX 580M: A Beautiful Lie

But all of that paled in comparison to one of AMD’s most recent mobile releases, the single-GPU Radeon HD 6990M.
You might expect the 6990M to consist of two Radeon HD 6970M GPUs, since that's how we get a desktop-class Radeon HD 6990.
Instead, we see AMD switch from an underclocked version of its Radeon HD 6850 to an underclocked version of its Radeon HD 6870. Whereas the desktop Radeon HD 6990 has almost two times the raw computational power of the Radeon HD 6970, the 6990M gains less than 25% over AMD's 6970M.

If AMD used GCN for the 7000 series discreet cards and VLIW-4 for the mobile versions, I could understand that. How much use would a low end GCN GPU be? But to call VLIW-5 chips 7000 series is really just dishonest.

<Sigh> It really is a buyer beware market.

I hate shopping for gaming laptops. I've become so jaded to the confusing/marketing number schemes that shopping for a gaming laptop has become worse than shopping for car insurance.

Agree. I just tell people to buy an Apple and STFU, 90% of the time they want to anyways ahah - least the people I deal with.
