Trying to determine if in a Dell XPS 410, the motherboard can run BOTH:

one 7900GS video card in the PCIe x16

AND one NVIDIA Quadro NVS 285 in the PCIe x1 (http://www2.pny.com/Nvidia-Quadro-NVS-285-128MB-x1-P1827C37.aspx)

TOGETHER for 3 monitor use?

The 30" dell LCD and the 24" dell LCD will be plugged into the 7900GS in the PCIe x16, and the 21.3" samsung 21.3" Model 213T will be plugged into the Quadro NVS 285.

Will there be driver issues with VISTA Ultimate AERO either 32 bit or 64 bit?

thank you very much in advance.

Gentlemen:

I'm such a newbie so i wouldn't know how to discuss these technical details like which is the "correct driver" and what not...though i do try...man...do i try to read and look things up and at least try to understand. i figure that over time, my effort in trying will pay off in that i'm learning and picking things up a tiny bit at a time.

on that note, i've done some digging around and this is what i can come up with from the source, which, as i understand it (please correct me if i'm mistaken), is actually NVIDIA, the company, and not the individual card manufacturers like pny or evga, et al. So, from Nvidia itself, this is what i found:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvista_x86_97.46_supported.html

Essentially, my very limited and uneducated understanding is that they are trying to tell us that this "Windows Vista x86 - 97.46" driver is for that entire page of cards. On that entire page of cards, i found the GeForce 7900GS (the one that is an option for the Dell XPS 410 and it has at least one dual link dvi output which i need for the 30" Dell), as well as the Quadro NVS 285 (this is a separate purchase which can also be at Dell, their pricing is similar to other places, please see below). Is this a very good confirmation that this "Driver version 97.46", which is ONE single driver, will run BOTH those 2 cards? I thought so but i'm unsure though it seems, on the surface, like it sure sounds that way.

The problem is: on the "find the right Nvidia graphics drivers" page, they list Windows Vista x86 or Windows Vista x64. I only know that there are 2 flavors of Vista's in terms of bits: 32 or 64. What does Nvidia mean by x86??? totally confused here. please see: http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp

i cannot find a driver for Windows Vista 32-bit for the GeForce 7900GS!! that driver version 97.46 seems to support only Vista 64bit and 86 whatever, and i do not understand what Vista 86 whatever really is?

Can anyone please decipher that? thx so much!

Nvidia SPECIFICALLY says that there is NO current support for multi monitors in even their MOST current beta driver 100.59! So how can more than 1 monitor work? what "tool" would one use to configure the resolutions of each monitor? this is a legitimate question that is very confusing, right?

xfx 7900GS would be for my dell 30" and 24" LCD monitors, and I'll have to use an unusual PCIe x1 (yes, x1) video card for my 21.3" Samsung 4:3 model 213T:

On page 14 of the above Nvidia document, it says that: "...Unsupported Features
The following are features and functionality that were available in driver
releases supporting Windows XP, but are not available in driver releases for
Windows Vista:
? High resolution scaling desktop (HRSD)
? MultiView Display Mode (for NVIDIA Quadro NVS graphics cards) ..."

That doesn't sound good for my 3-monitor situation...

Also: On page 6:, it says: "...Features Not Yet Available in the NVIDIA Control Panel
Support for the following control panel features is under development and not
yet available under Windows Vista:
? Display Category
? Run display optimization wizard
? Move CRT screen position
? Manage custom timings
? Run multiple display wizard
? Change flat panel scaling
? Video & Television Category..."

That comment about "not being able to "run multiple display wizard" also doesn't sound good.

What do you think?

I'll need, in the case of the Dell xps 410, a PCI e x1 (yes, x1) card to run my 3rd monitor. They have 2 choices at dell:

Dell has these 2 PCIe x1 PNY nvidia Quadro NVS 285 cards available, but they are slightly different but reading their description doesn't help!

Please see:

(1) Manufacturer Part# : VCQ285NVS-X1-H-PB
Dell Part# : A0943342
http://accessories.dell.com/sna/product...spx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=A0943342

(2) Manufacturer Part# : VCQ285NVS-PCIEX1-PB
Dell Part# : A0660865
http://accessories.dell.com/sna/product...spx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=A0660865

I need to choose ONE of those two in order to "work with" the 7900GS that they provide with the Dell XPS 410 "system purchase".

Nvidia specifically that their multiple monitor support is "not yet ready". How are all these other people doing multiple monitors on Vista Ultimate?

I'm so confused!

Yet, Microsoft specifically say that it is allowable to use 1 card on the x16 and one card on the x1 slot and it is FINE! Please see:
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device/display/multimonVista.mspx

IF nvidia's multimonitor "tool" doesn't work, how did you get to use 3 monitors? I should have asked you what you meant by "we didn't have problems with running 3 monitors". Did you use the extended desktop method? I do NOT want the "clone" mode where all 3 monitors display the same thing! Obviously, extended desktop is the desired one for almost all multimonitor users.

Does Vista have "built in" multi monitor "tools" ?
