I'm purchasing yet another Dell system for my wife an XPS 600 and it is bundled with a "7900 GS."

Is the GS a crippled "GT" flavored board or vise versa????

I dont think there's a 7900GS, except on laptops...

but generally, GS is a weaker than GT, yes.

in most cases it is weaker.
Like the 7300 gs is weaker than the 7300 gt.And the 7600 gs is weaker than the 7600 gt.
So i guess if the trend is like that the 7900 gs is bound to be weaker than the 7900 gt.
But i don't think those are available in the retailmarket anyway.

It is indeed a 7900 GS. I'm not too sure yet. I need more proof a link or something. I can't find anything via google.

Yep as you guys said. Finally found a news release:

Nvidia Corp. may add a yet another model to its already successful GeForce 7900 lineup. Dell Inc., the world?s largest maker of personal computers, has already started to sell a product called GeForce 7900 GS, which is projected to fill the gap between the GeForce 7600 GT and the GeForce 7900 GT.

The GeForce 7900 GS has 20 pixel processors, 7 vertex processors and 256-bit memory bus. Dell sells GeForce 7900 GS graphics cards clocked at 470MHz/1320MHz for core/memory along with its XPS 600 gaming computers. The GeForce 7900 GS is powered by the latest graphics chip code-namedG71, thus, comes with dual-link DVI outputs and other advantages the G71 has over predecessors, particularly, very low power consumption.

The difference on Dell?s website between a single GeForce 7900GS and dual GeForce 7900GS setups was $250, so if the card ever hits the retail market we can expect to see a retail price around $250, notes DailyTech web-site.

Featuring the 20 pixel processors and 470MHz graphics chip speed, Nvidia GeForce 7900 GS will deliver performance a little below that of the GeForce 7900 GT. But being a cut-down version of the latter, the product may have very low power consumption, which may allow manufacturers of appropriate graphics boards to equip it with very low-speed low-noise fans or even stick to passive cooling solution. Being priced at $250, the product competes against ATI?s Radeon X1800 GTO, but also offers significant competition for the GeForce 7600 GT with extra features that cost over $200.

Nvidia did not comment on the news-story.

u ust copied that from dailytech news.Anyway i don't think it'll ever come to the retail market and even if it does i'm sure the x1900 gt can take it down.

1. of course he copied it from dailytech, he said he found a "NEWS RELEASE"
2. it already has come to retail, in the form of Dell computers
3. the X1900GT is a terrible card that can't even beat a 7600GT, much less a card more powerful than a 7600GT.

Wouldnt a 7900 GS be nothing more than a 7800 GT ?

a 6800GS is more or less as good as the 6800GT( though I think it was menat to be 6800ultra competitor, right?

however 7600GS is weaker and 7300GS may be weaker too, agp 7800GS is probably weaker than 7800GT

My 6800GS stomps my friend's 6800GT. NOt only that, but it OC's very well. Back on topic. Can someone give me a link to this "7900 GS" and normally(not all cases) the order is like this: TC,vanilla(no moniker),LE,GS,GT,GTX, and GX2.

TC is only available on a few very low-end cards, and *apparently* they're not as good as the vanilla versions. basically, TurboCache (TC) < LE/XT < vanilla < GS < GT < Ultra / GTX < GX2 (though i'm not sure if that's an official moniker)

7800GS is only in AGP form, but it does lose to the 7800GT, which is only PCIe. A 6800GS stock is slower than a 6800GT, but they're pretty much the same chip.

No, the vanilla form of the cards are better than the TC version of the card. For example, the Geforce 6200vanilla was quite a bit better than the 6200TC, and the X1300 vanilla is better than the X1300 hypermemory(ATI's equivelant of TC). The vanilla cards don't take up system ram while the TC cards do use system ram.

hm, I could've sworn I saw a review that had the 6200 TC beating the 6200... oh well, I'll take your word for now.
