nVidia pricing by crackheads??

I've been on vacation, and on my return I see the 5900nu priced at $9 less than the 5800nu on Pricewatch.

I wonder if anyone actually orders the 5800s instead?! What would they be thinking? "Let's see, main difference seems to be the 128bit memory costs more than the 256bit memory. It costs more, must be better".

If the pricing of the 5800nu accordingly moved $50 cheaper to $200, it would compete with anything ATI has for $200.

The Gods Must Be Crazy.

Basically, and this has been discussed before, it's probably due to the fact that the 5800 costs more to make (according to someone else) and they were produced in much fewer numbers.

Where has the 5900 being cheaper than the 5800 been discussed before? A search on 5800 and 5900 didn't reveal this to me.

It was somewhere in some post...Didn't mean in an offending tone, just wanted to show that this was a synopsis and not my sole opinion.

Actually I think they were discontinued before the 5900s came out, but they produced 100K nV30 chips.
Anyway, expensive DDR2 or not, it's interesting (to me at least) that a slower, older part is selling for more.

yeah I was gonna say, the 5800 was "mistake" and nVidia is simply just phasing them out, it's why we saw orignal GF3s priced higher than GF3Ti 500s a few months after the Ti debut.

Why would this surprise you? Ever go look for a Voodo5 on pricewatch.com?

117 is the lowest price..............

I wasn't aware nVidia makes the chipset for Voodoo5s, or that the pricing of one company's product line had anything to do with another's other than the "comparable goods" aspect of supply and demand pricing?

or that GeForce3 for $500 a while back after the R9700 came out 🙂
See above, with addition of "lesser performance" sometimes does not equal lower price. (e.g. Matrox Parhelia, Voodoo5)

The reason this situation is odd is that it is comparable to GF3s selling for more than GF4s after GF4s came out. I know this sort of thing has happened before, but it was odd then as well.

I just ordered the GFFX5900 from eVGA. Cant wait. Price was lower than a 5800nu I couldnt believe it.

Normally higher end cards are sold with a fair markup to recoup R&D costs, hence selling the 5800 for more than the 5900 seems silly, as the costs to make is probably less than the RRP, so they are only selling that high because they are, not because it's more expensive to make.

Do you think a Radeon 9800Pro costs $70 or whatever more to make than a 9800 non-pro? The difference is in clock speeds and markup. The 5800 being so expensive IS silly.

Books that sell for $20 RRP are bought for $10 or so (I know the newest Harry Potter book cost sellers 1/2 the RRP), and graphics cards are probably similar in general terms, but the 5800 won't costs that much to make, even if it does cost more than the 5900. The sellers just don't want to lose too much money in selling their 5800's because they want to maintain profit margins.

You are in the train of thought that Nvidia is out in the open market setting the prices. They arent at all. Those prices are most likely based off the costs of the FX5800 when it first came out last March or so. The vendors set the price at whatever the market will bare or whatever thier margins can bare.

Apparently some vendors are stuck with 5800s and dont want to sell them at a loss.

Genx, did you get to play with the EVGA 5900 yet? If so, how did it go?..

Thanks,

GM

Oh ya sorry about not posting about the evga card last weekend. Hit the cabin for some fun 🙂

Card runs great in everything so far. I havent DL'd 3dmark03 yet to give you an idea on how it runs. But if I get time tonight Ill do it.

BTW what is a good tool for OC this card? I heard 5900 Ultra speeds can be had pretty easily.

OH btw the card's sound is lower than my GF4. They both appears to have similar cooling solutions except the 5900's HS covers the ram also.

Actually, it is because the yield of higher end chips is lower and therefore they command a premium.

I went and checked out the claim for myself, it's not quite true. 🙁

Voodoo 5 5500 AGP cards are near $40ish

Voodoo 5 5500 PCI cards are near $100+

So unless your cards are PCI versions, you won't make big bucks, although $40 is not too bad considering.

Yah, even 500/1000 is being done with stock cooling. Thats great that its even quieter that your GF4. What color is the PCB? Is it exactly like the eVGA picture? or are there differences...

Thanks,

GM
