Nvidia or windows firewall?

didn't know nvidia had a firewall, but I use the SP2 firewall on my machines with XP coupled with the firewall built into my router.

As far as bacon goes, don't use the microwave method, just no natural.
 
If you have a NV4 chipset motherboard, the firewall is in hardware. I'd use the hardware one unless you find any reviews comparing them saying differently.
 
yeah thats true the NF4 chipsets use a hardware firewall, which is suppoed to relieve the CPU of the work load which in turn improves performance from the CPU.. i cant say for sure whether it is better then a software firewall, like Norton .. i dont personally trust windows firewall, i use Norton myself ..

Another vote for Zonealarm here. I have my Windows firewall disabled (xp pro sp2) - I've been using ZA for several years now and for a free firewall, it's tough to beat.
 
OK, the bacon was good and I hear lots of calls for Zone Alarm. I did a search on Zone Alarm to find out more about (like every good newbie should) and its seems people have problems with it regarding their networks. I have wireless network setup for my house and the last thing I want is problems with that. So I read people usng Keiro don't have any problems and that that is a good firewall as well. I figure between that and the hardware solution in my D-Link router, I should be good. Thoughts??
 
zone alarm are u INSANE, the hardware firewall is as good as any software firewall AND BETTER, its like my buddy says a program made to stop another program from accessing your program is a badddddddd idea, whoes gonna make the program to stop the program from accessing your firewall program 😵

I use ZA free on my network fine. Just need to use static IPs and add each comps IP in the Trusted Zone in the other PCs ZA.

The reason is because a good software firewall can prevent outgoing traffic. Where as most hardware firewalls don't. Thats why having software in addition to hardware is a good idea. So no, he is not "INSANE", and a hardware is not better then a software firewall, they have different applications. As well a software firewall can prevent attacks or information piracy from within your own network, especially if you run an open wireless network (God forbid)

As for good firewalls
1. ZoneAlarm- FREE - Good firewall needs to be configured forsure, does a great job tho.
2. ZoneAlarm Pro - Pay - I have no idea what you get in addition.
3. Norton - PAY - Again a good firewall but for home networks needs to be configured.
4. Kasparsky - PAY - They offer a good firewall and antivirus solution for windows x64
5. BlackIce - PAY? - Crap. More holes then Bushman5's command of the english language.

If you want to read a good article google grc, I believe, and read about the DDOS attacks etc and why he reccommneds zone alarm. Also some interesting scans.

i love kerio personal firewall version 2.1. it's the older freeware version -- their newest version is 4.x and i think it's bloated...

i usually don't stick to old software, but this one is a keeper. 🙂
 
I turned off my nf4 firewall in win xp x64 because it was causing problems with bit torrent and random blue screens while using bit torrent. I normally dont run a windows firewall. I perfer the security of my m0n0wall. It gives me in and out bound rules, stateful firewall features, nat, and vpn. Good enough for me.
