I was wondering who had the better chipset in 754 sockets

the nVidia or Via chipsets, i've heard Via's k8t800 and now their pro release was on top

And also on the new 939 sockets, is nVidia's nForce4 leading as of now?

I prefer nVidia... I can't tell you why, except that I had a couple troublesome Via chipsets that left a bad taste in my mouth. At first the nVidia chipsets had better overclocking potential than Via... but I think Via has since fixed the issues they had with the PCI lock not working.

Via is the Kia of chipsets... low priced... warrantied... have all the features of the bigger companies... but people don't seem to like them.

I've had bad luck on both, though I think Nvidia maight be the best at the moment.

It depends really. If you're OCing then go Nvidia. If not, then VIA is fine. I've used the K8T800 and K8T800 Pro at home and work they are very stable chipsets. I wasn't satified with the OCing performance of the VIA but it more than likely was my CPU holding me back. I did manage 2.5GHz on a 3500 CPU Prime stable though.

If you are OC'ing, then I would definetely go Nvidia. Like many others here, I have had numerous bad experiences with VIA chipsets and would be leery about trying them when there is an alternative with a better reputation.

Yup i have the kt8 pro and i have to say i wish i went nvidia , theres some issues with overclocking, memory dividers, sata raid when overclocking.. But for the price they are pretty darn good if you ask me.

I prefer Nvidia, although the VIA chipset in my laptop has been fine.

I'd prefer SiS, but nVidia after that. VIAs, even when they work, still have quirkiness. Little problems here and there that just get annoying.

SiS (at least as the of the 7xx) are solid, good performers, stable as a mountain. Unfortunately, they're hard to find on nice boards, and they can't make enough chips to keep shelves stocked.

However, if you're not going to tweak much, it probably won't matter.

I don't think the chipset matters as much as the actual motherboard. nVidia chipsets have better motherboards, in my opinion, so I would choose them.

I'd like to see more info on these new ULi chips. Anand had hinted they they are very good, and their cost is very low.

I have an Asus A8V K8T800 Pro, which is Via and have had zero issues with it whatsoever.
I'm only a moderate overclocker, but the board's been flawless so far.
Very happy with it.

However, if I were going to go the PCI Express route, then I think I'd go with the Nforce4 chipset over the Via.

I overclock so it's nvidia for me. To be honest I never even look at via these days, that's how good Nvidia is.

For socket 754, the nForce 3 250gb is a pretty nice chip, i have one and have been quite happy with them

AFAIK, they are the AMD chipset (since AMD offers that stuff royalty-free, ULi (ALi?) just made copies).

I have an ABIT K8V Pro, with the K8T800 Pro chipset. It works flawlessly and is a very good overclocker. I have acheaved 20% OCs, but my cooling and cheapo memory crap out. The mem dividers and the PCI/AGP locks work great.

However, there is a new crop of nForce 4 mobos for Skt754. If you want to build a whole system based on a 754, then nForce 4 is the way to go. cheers.
