So how exactly was the GF4 optimised for the P4? The article doesn't give any details. Could be meaningful, could be a flash in the pan. Are the drivers somehow optimised for SSE2?

Unless I'm grossly mistaken (not unlikely) this sort of press release comes out with each new geforce (the gf3 and 2 at any rate). I remember being concerned about sse2 optimization with the gf3, but that didn't come to fruition.

If you enjoy reading press releases, every piece of hardware is optimized for every other piece of hardware out there. One in particular I remember was Quantum announcing that their hard drives were optimized for the upcoming Itanium processors. Huh?

Exactly. What good is optimizing the drivers if the the software running has not been optimized for SSE2? I'm not saying that SSE2 optimised software isn't easy to find, just that it's not ubiquitous (to borrow a word from Pabster).

I remember a while back reading a quote from a game developer...I think it might have been John Carmack. The developer was commenting on SSE when the Pentium III was first released. The developer was saying that the best thing that customers could do was to ask video card manufacturers to make their drivers take advantage of SSE. That would have much more of a performance improvement than if a game developer were to optimize their game for SSE.

Interesting. I don't recall seeing video card drivers claiming SSE2 optimizations or reviews mentioning the SSE2 drivers specifically, but I wouldn't be too surprised that they would be necessary to improve performance significantly.
