NVIDIA NV40 to Come This Year

Twice As Fast Than NV35
by Anton Shilov
06/07/2003 | 11:24 PM

Since the NV35 is nearly in retail now and we know almost everything about the part, it is time to start reporting unofficial information about NVIDIA?s next-generation graphics processor, the code-named NV40 GPU. Apparently, we even have some facts to report about the upcoming graphics chip since another unnamed representative from NVIDIA told a couple of things about the upcoming product to this web-site during AMD Tech Tour 2003.

An NVIDIA official admitted that the NV30 was a big failure for the company, but the firm is still on track with its 6 months product cycle and six month after NV35 the corporation will announce another GPU, the code-named NV40. The representative from the Santa Clara, California-based company said the NV40 would be twice as fast as the NV35 and would feature entirely new architecture.

Besides, the official claimed NVIDIA ?The Way It Meant To Be Played? strategy to have two ramifications. Firstly, all participating game developers should use only NVIDIA Quadro professional graphics cards when designing games; secondly, many games would have certain features that only NVIDIA GPUs would be able to take advantage of.

Additionally, it was said that NVIDIA nForce3-based mainboards would come in July and that machines featuring NVIDIA nForce3, AMD Opteron processor and NVIDIA GeForce FX 5900 graphics card are ideal for gaming.

When do you think NVIDIA NV40 will be announced? I suggest that roughly a year after the NV30 at Comdex Fall 2003 in November. The graphics cards itself will in this case come either in very late December or in early 2004. Note that in the second quarter next year Intel rolls out its Grantsdale platform with PCI Express-based connection for graphics cards, so, it is logical to assume that either NVIDIA NV40 already features PCI Express or NVIDIA will release another NV40 architecture GPU with the support for new bus in the second quarter 2004. And that may be already the NV45, coming out six months after the NV40 in mid-2004, I assume.

And what do we know about ATI R400, or R420 products?

pretty boring. the video card world is in no way exciting anymore. nvidia this, ATI that.
its also funny that according to that source nvidia wants developers to forget ATI and make all the shiny effects for nvidia GPU's only...which will piss off a LOT of people.

i wouldnt trust anything posted by xbitlabs.

just look at what they spread on the net about ATI and the "built"by" thing.

their news are unreliable, untrustworthy and seem to be out in the clouds rather then based on facts.

on a personal note i currently own an ATI Radeon 9700 Pro and cant wait to be rid of it and go back to Nvidia. o please please please please let Nvidia make high performance video boards again, let the crashes and the stupid driver hassles go away. it freagin amazes me that after being 6-7 years out of the loop i still found same bugs in catalyst 3.4 that were plaguing the ATI cards back in the days of Rage 128 and prior. same font problems, same insatabilities. only difference is they are about 95% fixed now, but not 100 and are as plainly distinguishable as night and day. i cant believe i let people on the forums talk me into buying ATI. i so regret it its not funny, should've stuck with my GF3 card.

as far as Nvidia optimizing their mobo chipset for their video chipsets, i am very surprised they havent done it already. as a company they seem rather fond of specific optimizations, as drivers include many game specific and other software title specific optimizations and features and always have, it is only natural they would take same route with hardware.

I'm all for nvidia making a kick ass card and all, but it defiantly sounds like the nvidia official was using the press to hype up the product. The official did not say anything new that was all ready a rumor. The whole article is basically filled with BS and should of not been posted here to furthermore spread hype.

Shouldnt surprise anybody. Nvidia has been doing this since what, the TNT? The only product cycle they have missed since is speed bump for the GF4 when moving to the FX line.

You mean the 26% of the desktop market who purchases ATI products? Lets be honest here. Nvidias optimization program is a good thing for those who use Nvidia products. It wont kill people with ATI products. Just the game may not have special animations or run really fast on said software. Currently Electronic Arts is about the only major developer I know who is in this program. ATI should also get a program like this. GPUs are complex things and they are in thier infancy. We could only wish 20 years ago Intel\AMD would of had similar programs to optimize programs from the beginning to use special extensions ect....for each CPU.

I am more of an nVidia fanboy than and ATI fanboy (I've never owned an ATI product, after all), but if you think this will actually be entirely new and twice as fast, the term nVidiot comes to mind.

NV40 this year? Hahaha.

It would be nice if nVidia could just get NV35 out the door in numbers. Sure, NV40 might be paper launched (along with R4XX), but we won't see them on store shelves until much later.

ATi is being pretty hush-hush about R4XX, but everyone seems to think it'll debut in Q4 03 or Q1 04. ATi is rumored to waiting on Intel to finalize PCI Xpress.

Very true... nobody claimed AMD was cheating with 3DNow... and nobody claimed Intel was cheating with SSE or SSE2... and those create a fairly large performance difference in some apps.

smells like collusion to me

Just when I was going to replace my R8500 with a good ole' 5600 Ultra. Something new comes out! Damned nvidia!

it dissapoints me to read this thread.

Seems all faith in what was once a great company has been lost.

The representative from the Santa Clara, California-based company said the NV40 would be twice as fast as the NV35
....based on their "MPEG-2 pre-render optimizations" for 3dmark2004 🙂 (and no loss of image quality if you pre-render the scene!)

but who knows, maybe they'll start competing instead of chaeting by then and I can replace my geforce3.

Never fear... NOTHING new has come out. 😉 And WON'T until Christmas AT BEST.
We might see a successor to the 5600 Ultra... something using newer "Value" cores based off the 5900 rather than the 5800. But I'm speculating. If you want a 5600U, go for it. Don't wait 4-6 months for something that might or might not be coming!

I don't see why people say no chance.... You dont actually think Nvidia stopped working on NV40 because NV30 was delayed and crap do you? The delays they had gave them more time to work on NV40 then they would have had if they hadnt had any delays, I see no reason it wouldn't be out by years end.

Too much hype. I'll be surprised if it's 50% faster than the NV35. Nvidia is stupid enough to tell people who are going to spend their money of the NV35 ($500?), they should have saved their money. I'm going to buy the NV35 when the NV40 comes out, at least I know I'm not wasting $500.

i stopped playing games, and I see no reason to upgrade from my Geforce 2 Ultra (use DVI so crappy 2d is not an issue). $400 for a video card is problaby more than I will spend on my computer next yr (shuttle XPC + new CPU, reuse ram/HD/optical drive/Vid Card).

Video cards are way over priced

Didn't nVidia switch to IBM to manufacture their GPU's instead of TSMC? I doubt IBM would have problems getting the GPU's out the door for sale.

Twice as fast? Yeah, right. Just like the last claim I saw, when they said that it was based on one of the flyby timedemos of UT2K3. Big whoop. A flyby demo. One that's super old. On rails. And hella optimized for. With drivers that are thisclose to coming out for the public so it's cool that they suggest reviewers use them. I'll believe it when it is actually available.

Vaporware, plain and simple, until we see some kind of working silicon. Same goes for ATi with their 9900 Pro. (I say this because I refuse to play fanboi on either side of the fence; both companies make good products, but both are guilty of paper releases.)

Companies love doing this, hoping you'll wait to buy their product instead of getting the competitor's current offering. Eventually, though, you gotta stop waiting and just get what's available, otherwise you'll find yourself waiting forever.
