Nvidia notebook drivers (how do they work)

Does anybody know why certain drivers don't work with certain cards (conceptually)? I have a 580m gtx, which seems to be closest to a desktop 560Ti. The 580m gtx has no xp driver (even on laptopvideo2go) although the 560Ti and 580 desktop do, so I modded the inf on an older mobile driver to add the 580m gtx device name, which then allowed the Nvidia installer to continue, but am having minor issues (second display won't sticky, Deus Ex seems to be running at 4 FPS). Any ideas why some card need special treatment? Sorry for the noob question - I guess all I need to know is whether this is a lost cause, and just write off my XP stuff.

WHQL yes. But on laptopvideo2go there's an XP driver for the 560m (among others). I tried modding that, but couldn't get a second display to work at all, so reverted to an older version.
