I just moved an evga nvidia 5900 into a computer (Soyo kt600) and I am getting the insufficient power message. Everything appears to be hooked up fine. This is the third computer I have had this card in and the first time the problem appeared. The power supply is a generic 500w that was mated to this card in a different computer - so it worked previously together for a long time. Recently the card came from my Sonata which has a 380w psu and worked just fine.

This is a minimal computer: xp2000, two hard drives, cd rom etc

I have the latest nvidia drivers from their web site and still getting the error screen.

any suggestions?

The generic 500w psu (allied dual fan) could be a problem, but as I said, it powered a different computer:
xp2500 oc'd to 2.2 ghz
1.5 gb ram
2- 160gb seagates
nec dvd burner, lite-on 16x dvd, floppy, memory card reader
5.1 pci sound card, Pci wireless, usb 2 pci card
fan controller, 7 80mm fans
2 cold cathodes
wireless usb mouse/keyboard, usb printer, usb scanner
including the 5900
for over a year with no problem.

I moved the psu and 5900 to a different case ( replaced an old 300w and gforce 2 out of this spare computer) and the error message occured.

I'm thinking it may be software but I could be wrong.

I got a similar message with a 9800 Pro and oddly enough, somehow the molex connector came lose inside the case. Once it was reconnected, everything was fine again.

Well I may have narrowed the problem down to the molex connector soldered on the card.

The two mating molex connectors connect solidly to each other, but the back of the molex where it direct connects on the video card pcb seems like there is too much play. I got it to work by 'jiggling' the connetor. It would work fine unless it got touched - then I get the power warning pop-up.

I haven't studied the fix yet, and I also haven't soldered pcb's in 20 years. Any suggestions?
