I posted in OS's but now i'm not so sure it belonged there. My problem is that I clicked no while installing the drivers for my epox 8rda+ mobo ( the nforce 2 2.03 drivers) and I clicked no on the IDE SW drivers. Can anyone tell me what they are and if I should go back and reinstall to use them or not. I hear they are bad for burning or something?

You did the right thing to not install them. They are supposed to be "optimized" IDE drivers but they cause nothing but problems for the majority of those who have tried them.

The 2.41/2.42 drivers were supposed to remedy this but they presented all new problems. The drivers that NVidia is working on now are going to be an entire rewrite so maybe the IDE drivers in the next set will be worth trying. We shall see.

There is a way of updating the drivers actually - I think it's nVidia's installation procedure that screws up everything with the IDE drivers.
If you're using WinXP, set a System Restore point before doing this, just in case.;) It worked just fine on my system though.

Decompress the nForce installation EXE to a folder, using Winzip.
Go to Windows' Device Manager, and look for your main IDE controller, probably something like "Dual PCI IDE Controller" or similar. I don't know what OS you're using here, so I can't give very specific instructions.
Update/change the drivers for it to the ones in the decompressed nForce folder, in the IDE\WinXP folder (or whatever OS you're using).

This should update your IDE drivers without botching the system. You'll notice that you still have a Primary and Secondary controller listed after the drivers install this way. If you use the SW IDE installation procedure in the nForce setup, these controllers vanish, and all your drives are designated as SCSI devices. I think that's (partially) what was messed up in their installation process.

In all fairness I have never had any issues with the SW IDE drivers on my 8RDA+. In fact they were very stable and quite fast. They never caused my burner to act strange or Nero or any other cd writing software that I have to misbehave.

A trip to the nforcershq forums will find a bunch of people that have had issues with the SW IDE drivers. I have never loaded the ones included in the 2.03 driver set so I can't say for sure, but I did try the ones in the 2.41 drivers and they sucked big arse. I wound up reformatting AGAIN due to them and when I tried the 2.42 drivers I skipped the SW IDE drivers again.

I will give them a shot when the next set is released I just don't hold high hopes for their success.

So I guess it was a good thing I clicked no to the SW IDE drivers but Jeff7 What are you talking about? I use Win XP, but I'm not sure of what you are telling me to do.. Are you telling me a good way to install the SW drivers or a way to not install them? Right now I don't have them installed I clicked no during the installation of the drivers.

If you tell XP to upgrade your IDE drivers it will find all compatible drivers. Then you can choose which you would like to use. That is how I compared the different IDE drivers for speed and stability.

It's an installation procedure that should install the IDE drivers safely.
It is correct to click No to the SW IDE drivers during the normal install of the nForce drivers.
The method I gave above tells you how to extract the IDE drivers from the compressed file from nVidia, bypassing the flawed installation procedure, and still update the IDE drivers.

*shrug* I used the asus 1.16 series drivers (supposedly newer than the ones on nvidia's site) and those ide drivers haven't given me any trouble. Check and see if Epox has a specific driver set for your motherboard...the generic nvidia drivers could screw up badly.

So it is a way to install the SW drivers properly? or to install other IDE drivers properly? Right now I have the microsoft drivers.
