nVidia NF4 firewall vs. Windows XP SP2 firewall

I'm about to do a complete new and fresh install of Windows XP SP2 on a DFI NF4 board. As the title asks, which would I be better off using?

At this point, my current system is still on XP SP1, so I have no familiarity with XP's firewall (or nVidia's for that matter).

I'm on Roadrunner with a Linksys WRT54G connected via Ethernet (with 2 other G notebooks).

Well this seemed like a no brainer to me.

Who do I trust more for my PC security..... Microsoft

Or Nvidia?

Nvidia may be new to the Firewall business (afaik), but I'd still trust them more than Microsoft.

Do you know the differences between the two Firewalls, and can give us a technological run down?

Or you just base you advice on Cheap Slogans?

Well, now that I've actually done some reading on the subject, it looks as if some folks are having problems with the nV firewall. They'll disable it and use the XP one and the application will work fine.

Then again, I read lots of posts about the new DFI NF4 board not POSTing and whatnot and was able to get it running in 15 minutes. So, I guess those problems on the nV firewall could easily be user-related (Kaspersky was one that came up... which is what I use).

Nope! Just cheap slogans. Take it or leave it.

(Sorry if you're worried about your Microsoft stock going down, but you don't have to look far on the internet to find out that their software has been notoriously full of holes when it comes to security. And their firewall is useless for controlling access of applications on your system from making any and all sorts of connections to the outside world.)

I'm running the NV Firewall right now, and everything is working perfectly fine so far EXCEPT (as previously mentioned) Norton is unable to run LiveUpdate.

I suspect there is a reasonable solution to be had to fix this, and with a little effort someone here will find the answer.

I wouldn't blame the NV Firewall right off the bat though. It MAY very well be that Norton is doing something HIGHLY suspect with it's connection, that NV Firewall is saying "Oh no you don't. I'm not even going to dignify THAT request with bothering the user about it. Denied!" (You know like sending some Homeland Security invasion of privacy info to the CIA/FBI or something. If you'll recall the rumor that Symantec wasn't going to block identified CIA/FBI trojans.)

🙂

Ok Thank you for the explanation.

So now I know the nvFirewall seems to block a CIA/FBI thingie, and Other Firewalls do not. 😕

:sun:

P.S. I do not have even 1cent of any Stock.

I didnt like the nvidia firewall that came with my nforce 3. It would cause websites to stop loading half way through. It was only FW I was using besides the router. I had to uninstall it.

Ewww...multiple quotes...sorry guys...

Microsoft software has had a large number of holes id'd. However - the reason for that is that it's on 85+% of the desktops worldwide, so it's a freakin' huge target. Note that now that Apple's OSX is moving up in the installed base, holes in it are beginning to be found. The same can be said of most distro's of linux. There's no perfect OS. At least MS appears to be working toward making our computers more secure. Remember that the biggest problem and the reason there are so many zombie pc's out there is that average people do not maintain their systems with good patch management. They open all attachments that they receive, etc, etc, etc...

If we could edumacate all these average users to maintain some sort of patch management it would go a long ways towards resolving those issues.

Oh that's right...Microsoft has put out that Automatic Update thingie...

1. Don't use NV Firewall

2. Don't use Windows Firewall

3. Use Zone Alarm Pro!

Zone Alarm Free here. XPs firewall works real well at controlling access to the pc, but it doesn't have any control over programs trying to get out to the internet.

I luv SP2 by the way. 🙂
