nvidia newbie needs info

I couldn't resist buying the MSI 831 GeForce 2 Pro for $143.

I have a fairly decent ATI Radeon collection - AIW, Radeon 64MB, Radeon LE.

I am not partial to ATI, I was just waiting for the GeForce 2 Pro's prices to come down a bit.

I'm building a system strictly for gaming and already have all the hardware.
The MOBO will have the VIA KT133a chip.
Processor - AMD Tbird 1.0 Ghz @ 1.33 Ghz
Sound - Philips AE
60GB Maxtor ATA100
Video MSI 831 GeForce2 Pro
Micron 2100EX 21" Monitor
512 MB Infineon CAS2 PC133
I'll be using Win98SE or WinME as my OS

I am looking for any advice and/or links for info. Would like to find a good forum similar to rage3d. I am interested in tweaking and OCing. Would also like a recommendation for drivers.

Thanks in advance.

Not directly relating to the graphics card but a good peiece of advice is stay away from Windows ME!! I spent months defending it....then I found my brain and got rid of it. I have a 2k/98 dual boot now. Windows 98SE will be much better for you.

Which vid card did you have problems with in WinME ? I've heard some mixed reviews of ME vs 98SE for gaming. Some swear by ME, others 98SE.

I'm gonna be installing Win2K on another machine for testing and using with graphics programs. Will also use it for Internet cruising. I'm just hesitant to throw it in a gaming system until I get more familiar with it.

I may go to a dual boot eventually on my gaming machine, but for now, I'd like to stick with 98SE or ME.

Windows ME does have a couple of nice features over 98SE such as the smart filenames and the thumbnail views but there is not that much there. 98SE is not crashproof but I would say it crashes 50% as much as ME, W2k crashes about 15-20% as much as ME.

I never had any major graphics problems with ME, I have the problem with some Nvidia drivers where they don't like 800x600 and my monitor doesn't seem to like playing games at 1024x768 even though it has max of 1600x1200.

ME can be quite good at first but after a while I find that it crashes more and more.

Agree with you after six months with ME, I understand why the easier way is not always the good way.

I went dual boot Win2k and 98SE.

For the Geforce2 pro card, I heard that Leadtek's pro is not really a pro, so you might want to check that out with the MSI.

Since you couldn't resist, what are you waiting for? Nice rig

you can always goto Geforce FAQ for some common questions...

on the OS issue I would have to say stay away from ME...it's all bloatware from win98se and you get same or less gaming performance. Win2k would be a nice change and would actually work well if you play an assortment of current games. I can't guarantee that all the games will work (check NTcompatible.com if you wanna know which one do) but you have to deal w/ crashes rarely if any at all. If win2k really blue screens on you....ok let's not go there...🙂

Hmm, I have used ME with Ati/3dfx cards and found it to be flawless compared to 98SE and 2k. I get at max 1 crash a month and the performance is great. Yes it adds a few things that take up memory but with a slight amount of tweaking that stuff can be easily removed.

Maybe ME and Nivida cards dont go well together?

I agree with 'TheCorm'. A friend of mine had Windows ME and after just a few weeks reformatted and put Windows 98 SE back. Windows puts out 'new' OS's that are inferior to the last 'New' OS.
