nVidia - New Dawn demo

Youtube link for those that don't care enough to run the actual demo. Improvements from the last version:

While overall targeted resolution grew by "just" 2.63 times (1920x1080 vs. 1024x768), the overall triangle budget is higher by 571 times (7K vs. 4M). Hair went from 1,700 static strands to 40,000 tessellated and physically animated strands… and that even doesn't include Anti-Aliasing or advanced movie filtering techniques which are calculated in real-time.

Nice looking demo but I kept waiting for her to do something amazing beyond showing off her knockers.

I remember someone made a hack for the Tessellation City NV demo to make it run on AMD cards. Maybe someone will do the same for this demo. The screenshots look very nice in terms of detail on the skin, etc. In the video, the hair is the most impressive part about the graphics to me. Hopefully once next generation of consoles launch, we'll start to see much better looking games since obviously the technology is already here to make some huge advancements.

Yeah, it's just unfortunate that Consoles have to be limited due to price constraints. I understand that nobody wants a $700+ console but they shouldn't expect a gaming PC in a box then either.

This demo runs at 35fps even on my setup. Can't display OSD overlay to see GPU usage and temps etc.

Probably 🙂
The lighting could be better - the paper lanterns don't shine on Dawn, only on the tree. Also, there is quite a bit aliasing on the tree. And they could have worked on the motion capturing, this chick is sitting there like a puppet.

Sit on a swing type thing without swinging... they could have done a lot of PhysX on hair, wings, ample assets etc.. but no, give her the shortest hair that isn't even noticable with the physics.. meh.

Little too uncanny valley for me. Might have helped if she did something interesting and didn't have that creepy half-smile.

Also, doesn't Nvidia have some hair animation demo with longer hair from a while ago?

Does this thing loop indefinitely?

Honestly, couldn't they have made her do something? Anything besides sit there and give uncomfortable stares?

An evil fairy flying in followed by a huge magic fight catching trees on fire, damaging the surroundings, etc. would have been great.

The theory that when graphics are so lifelike that it is impossible to tell the difference from real life, that it will kill you.

Or something like that, google it.

No, in that case you're fine. It's a valley since you're OK on both sides, it's the middle where it's almost real but just not quite that freaks people out.

Is there anything more pointless than tech demos? Does anything released ever look anything close to the tech demos released for the given generation?

I know the definition of uncanny valley. Was asking if that was the reason ViRGE said Dawn was creepy 😉

Is there no control other than the mouse control? The camera is focused on her breasts and I want to zoom in on other parts of the scene, such as the tree, lanterns, face but when I roll the wheel it goes right to the chest. I did find a pimple over her right breast, though. Fairies aren't clean beings after all.

I don't know what FPS I was getting with my 670 but this looked great. Very nice skin texture. Foliage with that isn't 2d and not tropical big leaf foliage that is easy to do in 3d. Great hi-res textures, lighting, and smoothness from a 670. Was surprised. Youtube doesn't do it justice. Their 1080p videos are compressed and blurry.

Wish there was interaction possible to highlight physics. Push her swing, change wind directions, lighting. Make her face less creepy, lengthen hair, and reduce boobage. Yea, I said reduce the boobs.

They could've got a better reception with this just by adding some basic interactive features for the physics and lighting.

Little of topic - I might be missing something obvious, but isn't it possible to get on-screen FPS display with EVGA PrecisionX? For the life of me I can't see that option.
