Nvidia looking to release yet again another beta (in Jan)

I had high hopes for a WHQL driver come January, but now according to an Nvidia Rep on the Nvidia forums, we're looking at another beta.

I hope I'm wrong but i'm really doubting Nvidia will ever resolve this TDR, driver instability, etc. My guess it is a combination of bad engineering/drivers.

In all fairness, they're at least acknowledging it... but the wait... the wait....the wait:whiste:

are you experiencing TDRs or instability yourself?

I had about three instances of TDR within two weeks. That happened about a month and half ago or so. Hasn't happened since. Still on 285.62. Maybe try installing older drivers?

oh now I see that you are using 275.33 Can you replicate the errors over and over?

If I do a windows tweak and hide the underlying issue, I'm good. As for the current driver, I'm trying the newest beta.

WHQL doesnt mean squat other than MS certification. In fact some betas may be superior to some WHQLs in performance or stability. Betas usually introduce improvements or fixes over the last WHQL since most betas are built upon the older WHQLs. I'm only speaking about Nvidias drivers here, with other components (soundcards, nics, etc) it may well be advisable to wait for WHQLs.

yeah most of Nvidia's worst drivers, including the one that let cards cook themselves, were WHQL. I always let others be the guinea pigs and wait for feedback before installing a new driver.

Nvidia= The new ATi, driver-wise.

Give me a break.

I've been using "beta" drivers for months. If it lets them get out features and improvements faster, I am fine with not having a little certified by Microsoft logo on them.

I hope you know that even if they release a whql driver, it could/will still contain bugs and instability. The whql process is not really an exhaustive process.

Wow, still having TDR issues? I wonder what the common theme among people having TDR issues is. Is it brand specific? Hmm. Luckily my 580s haven't had any problems (MSI lightning GTX 580s), but I've heard lots of rumblings at the nvidia forums about this.

I get them every now and then, the last 6 releases. Used to NEVER get them with the old 280x series.

Most the time though its easily fixed by not enabling power saving stuff, or just when i get them reset computer. When i get them the culprit is normally just certain repetitive stuff.

nvidia wanted me to send my computer to them so they could test it out but could not do that. 😛

WHQL means nothing to do me. They paid MS money. That is all it means to me. Granted, I do think the WHQL program is good overall, but we are enthusiests here. I have never had a problem with non-WHQL drivers from nVidia.

I probably should have been more clear on why I was looking forward to this WHQL driver in particular, An Nvidia rep claimed that the WHQl driver released in January would be the fix for the TDR's. Now Nvidia wants to release another beta which probably means they don't have a fix or even one in sight.

Take this with a grain of salt everyone, but now rumours are spreading that Nvidia could possibly have thousands of bad boards flying around, thus related to the common TDR issue that many are seeing while others are not.

I still experiance problems with the gpu driver shutting down from time to time. Not just gaming, but having several windows open can cause it.

Yah it was just certain things, like websites with flash, or VLC crashed when playing a movie and would get it.

I could go months without one, then get like 8 in a row. Reset computer fixes it for a long time again. Its been suspected its a power saving issue itself.

After Nvidia requested it, many people with the issue sent their cards in for Nvidia to test. The outcome of that was that the boards themselves were all in perfect condition. So as expected, this is a software issue.

For my part, setting 'Prefer Maximum Performance' in the Global Driver settings completely cured my daily TDR errors. Haven't had a single one in the last couple of months.

I'm 100% certain Nvidia self-certifies their WHQL drivers.

So that begs the question what is wrong with these drivers that they won't pass muster?

Im sure its just because they dont want to give MS any more cash than they have to, i know i dont like giving MS cash if i can avoid it.

To me Betas and WHQL nvidia drivers have been the same to me. Never had problems with either.

To me nVidia beta is WHQL,, and ATI beta ,, is really Alpha ,,,

What the hell is this tdr business? I've never had any such issue as long as I've been using Nvidia cards, and thats a long time.
