Nvidia: Inferior Open GL filtering quality despite of HQ driver setting

I cant really tell the difference but see for yourself. Does this mean when you select 'High Quality' (I assume is supposed to turn optimizations off) they are still in place which results in shimmering? If so I can't really see any difference in those pics.

This doesn't surprise me as nVidia's control panel has always been piss-poor with regards to (in)correctly applying settings, and this is one of the many reasons I've used nHancer for years.

In terms of IQ this will have a huge affect on the 7xxx series but should be marginal on the 8xxx because their hardware filtering is outstanding even if the driver tries to hack away at it

Here's a writeup I did on the subject a while ago about GF 7xxx cards. There are some good links to external articles there too.

It should also be worth noting that this is at least the second time nVidia's had the issue with their control panel.

One other time it happened was just after the 7xxx series? launch and it was found HQ wasn't disabling the optimizations and you had to manually untick them, just like is happening here now.

My writeup has a link to such an investigation.

I can see plenty of difference, especially in the Prey screenshot with all the moire patterns. Anyways, the resulting shimmering effect is much more pronounced in motion than in still images.

The Prey screenshots were probably done on GF7 hardware which is so bad with optimizations you can usually spot problems in still screenshots.
